Canbus LED lamps for my Octavia?

Featured Replies

I wanted to install LED-lamps to the rear and front turninglights.

I Googled around to find information and came up with that I must have LED-lamps of "CANBUS" type if the car's system should recognize the LED-lamp as an ordinary lampbulb since the LED-lamp requires very little current and the CANBUS system therefore thinks the lamp is broken.

A CANBUS type of LED-lamp is recognized as an ordinary lamp.

So I bought 4 pieces via e-bay and the seller was situated in China.

The ad clearly stated that is was CANBUS type of lamps.

It was not that expensive.

The LED's finally arrived but when I tested them at the rear they flashed very quickly as a lamp will do when one lamp is broken in the cirquit.

So my questions are:

Have I got the wrong types of lamps (not CANBUS)

or is my car NOT equipped with the CANBUS system?

My car is a Skoda Ocatvia manufatured in july 2001 and regarded as 2002 years model.

Leds won't work as main indicators unless you have a resistor. The flasher relay will flash faster if there is a blown bulb or if its a led. Only place you could put a led indicator bulb is the wing mounted side indicators

I think only Mk2 Octavias have a proper CANBUS system.

IIRC the Mk1 only has a small CANBUS cable between the ECU and the CCU, its nothing to do with the lights.

I don't agree with you at all!

The whole point in using LED's of CANBUS type is that they shall be recognized as ordinary bulbs in a car with CANBUS system.

The special feature with CANBUS LED's is that they require the same amount of current as an ordinary bulb and therefore they will be recognized.

There are ordinary LED's too without the CANBUS feature and they will for sure be not recognized in a car with CANBUS.

It is those LED's that requires resistors so they consume more current and therfore will be recognized as ordinary bulbs.

You can Google on canbus LED and you will get more info on the subject.

Thank you for that answer.

You should think that LED's of CANBUS type that consume the same amount of current as ordinary bulbs should be recognized in that system too but apparently not..

So what kind of LED's shall I have in my car?

Anyone who knows?
