What to look out for - TDI 100 Estate 53 Reg.

Got the chance of a 53 Reg TDI 100BHP Elegance, in swap for 2x Y-reg 1.4mpi Hatches (1x worn out, 1 on the road with 2 months MOT) and £250.

The TDI has 140,000 miles and no MOT, but is in good condition.

I'm going to have a better look at it tomorrow, take it for a drive etc, make sure there's nothing obvious wrong with it.

So the question is, is there anything major to look out for? Obviously the main things to worry about are the Timing belt and the clutch, at 140k I'd expect both to have been replaced at some point. What is the best way to tell if the clutch is on its way? Just a high biting point? Juddery? What are the symptoms of DMF failure?
