VRS Coolant warning

Featured Replies

Just driving home tonight and got the message on my dash to stop and check coolant level. Couldn't stop there and then so drove home keeping an eye on the temp gauge and it didn't move.

Checked the coolant level and it has dropped and I can just see a small amount in the expansion tank.

Yesterday I noticed it had dropped about 1cm below minimum so I topped it upto maximum thinking it was just a general maintenance top up but obviously now I realise there is a bigger problem and there is no obvious sign of a leak.

One other thing I repaired the alternator sense wire yesterday and didn't notice any leaks but now wonder if I may have caused it messing around in that area.

Any ideas of what to check.

Cheers

Ive just had this problem it was the head gasket :( thought id share dat n possibly make ur day lol

Well had a look this morning. After takingg the car out from the garage I noticed pink water drops under the car and looking under the car I noticed the cross member was all wet, right under the rear of the engine.

I thought it might be the heater matrix so had a look down the back of the engine. I noticed one of the rubber pipes had pink crystals (see pic) on the metal clip with a small split in the hose there was also pink water marks where water had run down the matrix pipes. Hopefully that will be the problem but had to order the hose so I will see tomorrow.

Ok a further update, it gets worse. Stupidly I assumed the pink water on the garage floor was water and the pink coolant, turns out its oily so now I am thinking its actually power steering fluid.

Got under the car and there is a bit of fluid across the cross member but I can't actually see a leak. Now here is the interesting part last week I adjusted the steering assistance with vcds to give less assistance, could this have caused an issue, secondly and more interesting I had a new track rod end fitted last week and a wheel alignment now I have just noticed one of the steering boots has a brand new jubilee clip on it, on the inner end of the boot. So now I am wondering if they broke something getting the old seized track rod end off and fitted a new clip over the boot.

I have also long thought the steering on the car likes to wander so I am also thinking maybe the rack was on its way out anyway. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

P/S fluid is green (ish) from memory. Pink is G12 coolant and oil could either be it picking up oil as it flows down or from the floor?

i couldnt see the source of the leak when i looked under the car when i had my problems because it only leaked when the car was running

Thanks for the replies. I checked the PS resovoir (before seeing the replies here) and it is indeed green, so relieved it's not that. G12 I guess is the anti freeze, is this the only pink liquid in the car.

I can see when I got right under the car that it's sprayed pink liquid everywhere, it looks like it is dripping onto the exhaust from the heater matrix area, I am just hoping it is the pipe I have ordered.

The oily feel to the pink liquid is what has thrown me, it almost feels like brake fluid.

Glad I found this topic as I have a coolant leak which has been doing my head in for over a week - have been losing water about every other day but cannot see where the water is coming from - no trace of water when I park up and no trace of fuel in the reservoir or mayo on the oil capI have noticed a smell now and then when at a junction which smells like water on something hot so assume is dripping and evaporating - did top uo the other day with the engine running and noticed the water spilling out of the overflow in the expansion tank.System seems pressurised and filler cap locks.I have searched the forums but still cant find leak - any advice

Wherabouts does the expansion tank overflow pipe go to. Maybe I should check to see if anything has come out of there.

after looking under the car just as i stopped the engine after a drive, i could still see it dripping away, it was near on impossible to see the source of it though. the fans on at the back of the radiator blocked my view of where it was dripping through the bottom

cheers mate - I'll try to have a better look at the weekend

Did this ever get sorted? Having the same problem!

There were several posts previously, it turned out to be where the heater pipes go through the bulkhead and was dripping down onto the exhaust, thus leaving no trace of where it came from.
