"safety" camera vans - prior warning?

Featured Replies

Is there somewhere you can get slight advance notice of where these safety vans will be sited. One crafty beggar was sited behind some bushes, on my commute to work this morning, and I'm not sure if I got caught or not (was following a Celica quite quick, so hoping he got on camera and I was obscured whilst doing a tandem emergency braking manouvere. :o)

I seem to remember Jon posting something about this, but just wanted to clarify. To be honest, I drive around Devon with a false sense of security as police vans / patrol cars etc are really quite rare. :) This morning's "safety van" was the first I've seen in what must be a couple of years.

In the south east of kent they actually put it in the local paper when they are going to be around

Jason,

This page seems to be the closest to listing where they'll be...

Local press usually carries the locations of mobile cameras for the coming week (if you're lucky). Also, if you have something along the lines of tomtom, that can warn of mobile camera locations too :)

If it's part of a safety camera partnership where they get to keep part of the revenue then they do have to have them signposted , but not all of them are.

The police can do speed traps anywhere they want with no signing or warning.

Thanks for the link to D&C Police Steve, but that doesn't seem to mention safety vans, and it doesn't mention where one was this morning. :(

edit: oops, just spotted "A379 Rydon Lane" - that I fear is pretty much where the van was this morning. What does "bi-directional" mean? I thought the vans only caught people coming towards them?

Think it simply means they can park the van facing either direction

Playing Devil's advocate, it's only OK to speed if your bank balance can take it, cos a person will get caught sooner or later and probably on a clear quiet road at that. Hopefully, speeding will result in no more than a fine. Sorry and all that, but someone had to say it.

Something I know and acknoledge every time I get behind the wheel. But it would be nice for somewhere to have some prior warning of dates and stuff. Looking back on this morning's commute I do think I escaped because by the time the van was visible through the bushes both myself and the nippy Celica in front were down to 45mph so were OK.

I hate dual carriageways with 40 limits. :thumbdwn:

round oxford there are no warnings other than the panic calls from colleagues saying what they have seen. a bi-directional van means it gets both ways at the same time.

in oxford they park the van on a nice big wide open road and have roughly 4 hundred thousand million coppers 1/4 mile either way of the van to impose said TAX.

good use of resource but we shouldn't go into that again

Sounds more like an ANPR operation than speed cameras - trying to spot stolen/untaxed/uninsured vehicles. Nowt wrong with that.

nope, speeding. i know people who have been done. swines

I would put a vast sum of money on it that stolen, untaxed and/or uninsured vehicles do NOT (EVER!!) get sorted out in Oxfordshire. When you report those irresponsible **** - I've put in the stars myself, can't be bothered to fill it in... to the police or DVLA, you just get total and utter ignorance or lack of any form of willingness to resolve it.

Sorry but it's about getting the best 'cash per motorist' ratio, and those of category above in my post will also be speeding but just not pay...

This is a separate issue from speeding itself, you take your own chances doing so, like a lot of people out there on occasion or regularly ;)
