Suspension upgrades? What size?

Featured Replies

I was assured that my '59 tdi estate would have 55mm struts on the front - I was fitting ex scirroco 312 discs/hubs - low and behold, 50 mm came out, so had to add new struts to the list. Would have gone for the Bilsteins but was now in poo with VOR. Only things I could get in a rush were OEM boge, which were ok for 9 months or so but a couple of trips to France and they are bouncy now.

Are you upgrading the brakes to 312? Are you having to upgrade the hubs too, ie you currently have fixed caliper mount? Can't you check what you are about to fit? As this is not really someting you want to pay for twice ...

I didn't mention in my earlier post, but have you considered ground clearance? Maybe its only me. but I have smashed a sump once in France on a standard height Octy, and the inconvenience was considerable. Not (ever) doing anything to increase the likelyhood of that happening again. Perhaps you only drive on nice smooth roads?

The changes I made, pretty much the same as you propose without the lowering, improved the feel of the car to the point where if I fit the Bilsteins it will be for the claimed improvement in ride and hoped for increased durability rather than betterroadholding.
