Which Yeti to order and what spec.

A 1.2tsi DSG's fuel consumption is similar to a CR140 4x4 DSG.

4x4 or 2wd?

use off road in serious mud will require 4x4, but inroad use with winter tyres will keep you going.

What is your mileage - over 20,000 then consider a diesel, otherwise go for petrol.

Manual or automatic?

Most users on this forum have Elegance models, but there are others, SE is very popular, S less so and only a handful of E's.

I suspect that out there away from this forum, the most popular version will be the SE.

Of the petrols the 1.2tsi seems to be the best one, the 1.4tsi being thirstier, and then there is the mighty 4x4 1.8tsi, which has the same performance as the CR170 without the economy or price tag.

I had in mind 140CR 4x4 Elegance.

I can vouch for the 1.2 elegance, cracking car. This is an example of the sort of terrain a 2 wd Yeti can tackle with ease - I have also gone up this when it has been sill deep in mud!

Previously owned an SE 4x4 140 before swapping to an Elegance 4x4 110. Elegance spec upgrade is defiantly worth having, particularly like the leather seats an the xenon lights. However unless your towing then I would save your cash and get the 110 engine, as there's little to choose between them in day to day driving performance.

If you have a need for speed then the 170 is the way to go for sure, rather than the 140 and the 170 SE Plus could get you into that engine for less than the 140 Elegance.

First decision you need to make is petrol or diesel. As has been said at lower mileage petrol makes sense, lower fuel cost per litre and no dpf to worry about. Then you can think about 2 or 4 wheel drive. I do about 7000 a year and the roughest terrain i see is the road shown in the videos above so it was a straight choice between the 1.2 and 1.4. Fuel economy decided it for me. That and the fact that the 1.2 feels nothing like a 1.2!

I have a 140 elegance 4x4. The elegance equipment is excellent and the HIDs, and heated leather seats are a particular joy, the former make night driving much better for those over 40 (whose night vision is, whether or not they realise it, declining) and the latter are perfect for crisp mornings. The climate control just works.

I haven't driven a petrol or 170 but tested the 110-which is an entirely serviceable thing but the 140 feels (subjectively) a more punchy device for someone moving on from a 200bhp petrol turbo Seat.

I bought a demo as I'm not sufficiently patient, if I were ordering I would have opted for the huge sunroof.

The best value at the moment is definitely the Urban spec - however only available in 4x2 whether diesel (110) or petrol (1.2).

What budget are you looking at?

We previously had the 1.2 petrol DSG SE and it was a great car. Good value too in SE spec with essential stuff but without all the gadgets.

Now we have a 1.2 petrol DSG and a 4x4 170 Diesel and they are both good cars. Of course one costs more so it depends what you need.

I still maintain that the 1.2 on winter tyres will go most places a 4x4 will go, unless you plan offroading. So it's a far cheaper way into Yeti ownership if you don't eally need a heavy diesel engine or 4x4 system.

That last point brings me onto the other thing. Fuel consumption.

Because the 140 DSG 4x4 has the extra weight of a diesel engine and 4x4 system it's almost exactly as economical as a 1.2 petrol DSG, due to the latter being something like 150kg or so lighter. So at around £4,000 cheaper the petrol can make a lot of sense if you want auto. As a bonus you get a 7 speed on the petrol instead of a 6 speed the diesel comes with too!

BTW, the 170 CR diesel is rapid.

And the 1.2 manual must be lighter still, no? :)

aha, I see. I never tried the auto as I've never liked driving auto cars.

<p>Oh dear. I had my heart set on the 170 4x4 Diesel - but economy vs. initial costs is a good factor to consider: looks like I'll have to get 1.8 TSI instead</p>

I like the SE spec of my Yeti, I simply added a heated front screen and ESP. But there are a few things I'd like to have "de-specced" (is that a word?!) if only to save cash on things I'm not keen on, namely:

  • Climate control, as I prefer the "old fashioned" standard aircon - I just do, OK?!
  • Privacy glass - not a look I favour, albeit the Yeti glass isn't too dark unlike say Ford's offering

I had hoped I might be able to spec-up a S, but getting the bits I wanted including leather steering wheel, the SE alloys etc made it impossible.
