bluetooth fit on a facelifted Skoda

Featured Replies

Hello

I like to have bluetooth in a car. Im looking at buying a 2010 Skoda Octavia 1.8 tsi manual hatchback elegance. This has a BOLERO unit

by defualt the above car does not have bluetooth or a multi function steering wheel or maxidot ( I think )

The bluetooth I want is just simple bluetooth...............just a simple way to pair your phone with the car and just hear the calls over the speakers and be heard via an indiscreet mic. I dont want an external interface for this, all I want this my phone

I dont care about maxidot, voice dialing etc.

Like in my current car, I get in , pair my phone with the car bluetooth and away I go, no other devices needed , just my mobile phone and thats it, to make a call, I just pick up my mobile, go to contacts on my phone ( not on another device ) and dial and it just goes over the speakers of my car, no other device needed

From what im reading, I think I would need to buy a device something like this :

http://www.carsystem...ofit,id221.html

Just on this :

> Where would the box on this be physically located in the car ?

> Would any more wires need to be ordered or is this the ones that come with this kit all I need ?

> Where would the MIC be normally installed ?

> Does any other devices need to be bought ? ( I hear some people on about new stalks etc )

> Would this satisfy what im looking for ?

Sorry for all the silly questions as I know there are multiple threads on this. All a bit confusing though when I hear about maxidot, stalks, voice dialing, rsap, prep kit II, MFSW etc etc

Any advice on the above ? :)

Maybe this would be easier?

The link you posted says "NOT for cars without multifunction steering wheel"

We had one of those fitted last week, & barring the American accent, it's excellent

  • Author

so how does this work exactly

Is the current interior light removed and replaced with this I presume

and whats the accent thing about , does it tell you to call out numbers or names etc ?

Edited by obi604

Same principle as things like (I presume they work the same??) Parrots

- Mutes radio (but incoming audio is through speakers)

- Microphone in the unit

- Press to start a call from the unit, then it's voice activated "Call ... Home" etc...

- The American voice is there to tell you who's calling you (& for the setup of the phonebook)

- The interior light remains, & the unit fits on the black panel behind it, where electric sunroof controls would be

I can't quote of the extact compatibility of that unit with your car, but to answer your questions (in order)

> Box goes under the seat - there's supposed to be a carpet cover/foam box (see your second link) but you don't need them. I've got a unit unstalled under the passenger seat, velcro'd to the carpet and unless you have the seat all the way back, you cant see the unit (and even then you only see 1/2 of it)

> That's got all the kit - the two square connects plug between the bolero and the plug that's currently in the bolero and the coil of wire goes off to the box. You've also got the mic

> Mic goes in the interior lamp - there's a grill in there with a piece of foam in - you remove that and the mc snaps in to place

> I didn't in mine (i have maxidot though)

> I guess so, yes

I bought a different unit from those people (via ebay) after telling then what i've got and asking them what would work.

After i fitted it, before the car was coded, i was able to pair my phone with the unit without unsing the maxidot/stalks. The unit remains visible for three mins after the ignition is turned on, so you can initiate the pairing from the phone.

I was then able to make/receive calls etc (either from the phone or using the bolero display) so everything worked, but i had no display on the maxidot (which if yours doesn't have maxidot, i think would be the limit of what you could do).

Once the car was coded, you can then initital pairing using the maxi-dot/stalks, answer calls from there and see who's calling etc.

The one thing you may miss if you don't have maxidot is the ability to delete pairings, or swap phones (i have mine and my wife's phones paired. if we both get in, it tends to take who ever was in last, but you can swap the connection using the stalks). I guess if you only want 1 phone, that wouldn't be a problem.

Contact the seller, tell him what the car has and i'm sure he'd sort you out a unit

Steve

EDIT:

Oh, one thing to note about those units is that the first one you posted has a GSM antenna (the flat strip at the bottom). This means that that unit supports RSAP, and some units support ONLY rsap - which your phone may not. If the unit is rsap only and the phone isn't, it won't be any use. Some units support RSAP & HFP too (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth_profile) and work with almost any phone that has bluetooth

The second unit doesn't have the GSM antenna which means it probably doesn't support rsap, but will use HFP as above and be compatible with more phones

Steve, thanks for that excellent reply

So essentially based on Steve's Reply and with the unit installed and fully setup, it would work as follows

I would get in my car, the box underneath the passenger seat and the phone would pair automaically

I could then make/recieve a call from by initiating it from my phone or from the radio itself

When calls come in or out , it mutes the radio and I hear the sound over the car speakers

The microphones is in the interior light

Yes, with the caveat about RSAP (in case you didn't see that i've edited that post).

see the pictures on http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2a10017bd6 - you can (if you want - you don't have too) dial/answer/browse the phone book from the bolero (the unit shown is a columbus, but the bolero display in mine is basically the same - i think the voice dial shown is colubus only)

Another edit - i forgot to mention that if the phone supports it you can stream music from it (although i seem to remember that there's a box you have to check on the maxidot to allow that, so it may be maxidot only)

Thanks agian Steve for the excellent replies

I see your EDITs now.

So say for example I get the unit installed under seat and hooked up to radio etc etc......................whats this **coding** thing that needs to be done ?

The coding is either via the dealer or someone who has vcds (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VAG-COM) and it "programmes" the car to know about the bluetooth you installed. However, mine worked (except the maxidot) without coding, so if you've not got maxidot, i don't think you need it

so the steps are :

1. Contact the seller with your car details and he will tell you what unit to order

2. Physically install this device

3. Maybe get coding done

Is it a difficult job to install the unit

I wouldnt like to go at it meself and make a b@lls of it

sounds like you have to remove radio, run cables to box and interior light which probably involves removing facia etc which I dont really want to be doing

Wonder if I ordered this unit, would a fitter just come along and do it for me

Yep - that's about it.

It's a relatively easy fit, but i understand your concerns. You have to remove the facia round the radio, the radio and if you want to make it easier, the top box and glove box (and if you remove the glovebox you can end up with an airbag error (which then has to be dealer or vcds to reset)

Then theres obviously routing the cable up the pillar to the interior light.

Fitter should be able to do it for you - it would be no worse than any other bt kit or radio

sound, thanks Steve, great info

people make it sound very easy , but you need to be sure before proceeding with stuff like getting the correct unit, doing the install right, getting the coding done etc etc

On the basis I am a cheapskate, and its not hard to turn the stereo down manually :p I got one of these: http://www.avantalk.com/products02.php?id=24

Works well when I tried it at home and does voice dialling with my phone

Will see if I can mount it to look oem when I get the car !

  • 2 weeks later...

My experiance of the above Avantalk unit I suggested: the unit works fine for taking calls, but the voice dialling doesn't work very well, so not recommended.

Oh well it was worth a shot at £14 delivered, and is fine for recieving calls !
