Anti virus for Android phones

Featured Replies

Is it advisable to put some anti virus software on an Android phone ?

Plenty of free Apps out there from well known places.

They're all from Google, so I can't see them being infected.

I've had Android for 2 years and never encountered an issue other than the odd app responsible for making the phone crash.

I would strongly recommend F-Secure, they provide security for many platforms including Android. One of mine favourite feature is that if your phone is stolen you could wipe it clean by just sending a command from any other mobile phone, the "wipe" option is destroying the phone effectively by wiping all the info down to root level, so the b*****rds getting a brick

I use Kaspersky (came free with 'puter) and it come with a version for Android phones

I don't bother tbh. Don't want anything slowing the phone down.

If you're the sort of person who gets suckered into installing a million FB apps called "OMG! Can you believe she did that?!" by accident then yes, run an anti-virus app. If you don't read all the permissions that apps ask for from the Market then you simply don't know what you're getting, and there's very little QA on Android compared to Apple so it would be easy to pick up something malicious. Google can remotely pull apps from handsets if they're proved to be malicious, but by then the damage might already have been done and your information nicked/damaged.

If you're more like me, and you simply have your "core" set of apps from trusted vendors and don't really add anything else, just update what you have, then you're probably fine without anti-virus. There's relatively few actual exploits or hacks for Android and nothing that doesn't need several intentional steps to do. The main risk is simply installing apps which ask for your permission to read your messages, emails, etc. I use McAfee Mobile Security, although I didn't buy it for the anti-virus at all, I bought it for the remote lock and wipe features. I've since found something else to do that for free, so once my McAfee subscription expires it'll be getting uninstalled as it's not really necessary for my usage.
