Using flip type key without remote central locking

Featured Replies

So I was working on my mates S8 today and among other things, I ripped apart the key fob. He's currently using the generic VAG flip type key, not the fancy S8 one. Now here's what got me thinking. The immobilizer chip can be moved to another key, that I know because I've already done so. But if I were to buy a flip type key off ebay and move the chip to it from my original blade type key. Assuming its been already cut, I should work. I realize I wouldn't be able to use remote locking simply because I don't have it. But the central locking mechanism and the ignition/immobilizer should recognize it, shouldn't it?

I never really given a damn about immobilizers and central locking until two months ago, since I hadn't yet owned a car manufactured after 1984. This is way outta my comfort zone. But has anyone done this?

Ta, mate. Just ordered one.

Wouldn't risk breaking the imo chip (IMO ....lol)

I did do this however on the wifes, but then I do know what is required generally to recode a new chip to the car.

I would have thought getting a blank transponder wouldn't cost much and safer and then you have a spare key also.
