Airfilters fitted?

Featured Replies

Hi guys been thinking about air filter and dont have the money to buy itg etc so thought i would use the one i had on a saxo... Yer i know its kinda cheap bit im impressed.

The car seems to pull so much better at high revs and the noise is brill. I can hear the dump valve as clear as day now and its got the good gggrrrr.

Will post couple of pics later to see what you guys think.

Also the standard airbox had a pipe coming out the bottom is this to catch oil??? just a bit strange wasnt expecting it when i removed it.

Watch for a metallic grinding sound (really hi pitched) i had this problem when i ran a cheap filter on it to start with and it got worse and worse so it was quickly whiped back off.... So just a word of caution to keep an ear out :)

Is it enclosed or open?

the pipe at the bottom of the filter box is too drain water. theres one on the battery tray too if you rummage.

your potentially on dodgy territory there mate. N/A engines have a much higher tolerance to particles entering the engine so you can use free flowing cheap filters with no issues.

Turbo charged engines on the other hand require a much lower tolerance of particles getting through the filter otherwsie you can cause muchos damage

This is the sort of thing your paying for when buying an ITG, who develop their own filters rather than just buy them in like everyone else does.

ITG will stop any particle above 10microns iirc, cotton filters are said to be in the 20micron range

Watch for heat soak as thats right next to the turbo/exhaust so it will be taking hot ait straight from there so youl probably be loosing power

Sorry to be negative but won't that cause a power loss? Due to all that heat being sucked in, as it's known these engines run hot in there.

You seriously need some sort of heat shield on that filter

I've got to agree with the comments, a heat shield is needed as it will be suffering from heat soak

yea just sorta playing guys looking at getting viper and fit that.

yea thought i might get affected by heat but not at the moment got reader for ecu so gonna read inlet temp's tomoz while driving, got idea of what inlet temps are like when running standard and if its much greater will be going back to standard for now.

I have to say it feels better after 5000 rpm pulls well in 5th around the 100mph mark.

i would proberly be effected by heat sink if i was running on mainland (built up traffic etc) but roads i drive on are more lyk country roads and with temps down at 4.0°c last couple of nights its been okay.

The noise from the dump valve is perfect :-)

ebay has plenty of heat reflective tape any1 knows if it worth giving it a try can get hold of a sorta enclosed cone filter might help if not fully enclosed should do job, do air filters that look lyk itg work just as gd i.e rr read out comparing???

Have a look at the 2.0tfsi Itg kit. It uses an open foam filter with a foam divider which is what you need to make to keep that style. The Itg has the biggest proven gains over its competition

I think if you don't have the money to buy ITG you should save or don't buy one.. because taking care of your new engine should come second to none

I think itg have earned their name but thinking well you can buy the foam filter for inside enclosed unit for £45, i just cant justify paying that kinda money when all it is, is universal okay comes with the right reducer etc.

I have a VI Monitor and did some driving about today outside air temp highest was 7.5 and lowest was 5.5, the air intake temps whilst driving: highest 17 and had lows of 13 usualy stayed about the 15 mark.

One thing i did notice according to the unit the throttle doesnt open beyond 89%, gonna try and vag-com out to check (only free version) and look at the blocksairtemp.pngAir tempThrottleposition.pngthrottle position

As for a heat shield you'd want something like this which can be bought off ebay and the like

Failing that, a K&N Apollo or Pipercross Viper might be worth a look into. Both reputable companies with years of experiance making air filters.

The ITG one does provide the biggest performance increase but it does have the price tag to match. I personally wouldn't go down the route of an open filter but its up to you.

The question is do you really need an intake right now?? Would it not be a sensible option to just save for a couple months so that you can afford something proven. Im a big believer in do it nice or do it twice

Just to bring this back up slightly. I've seen most of you think it's best to just save and buy the best, bit if you did just want to stick with a panel filter, I've seen a few options.

There's a REVO and pipercross which are both around £45, K&N one at around £50 (anyone tried one of these before?) or the ITG replacement at between £90-£100.

Is the ITG panel filter worth the extra money at around double the price of the others? Are these replacements much better than the standard filters? Or is it best to just ignore them all and spend the extra couple hundred quid on something like the ITG maxogen?

Cheers

I dont think its worth it tbh.

A panel filter, IMO, isn't worth the money they are. I have a Revo one previously and it did very little/nothing to warrant the extra spend.

Buy the ITG if you want to add performance to the car, if not they just de-sock the original filter.

The standard set up on mine has been fine with a panel filter but I have modified the OEM box and intake.

Cut the slats in the front grill out, remove the plastic mouth that feeds air (held in by 2 torq screws) cut the plastic away so the flow is straight in, remove the actual air box, unscrew the lid, cut away the plastic inside the box which directs the air round, you can feel it sucking from the front grill just as much as an ITG intake.

OEM looking under the bonnet too :)

Stay clear of the forge intake, waste of money IMO.

Sib-rs you got a picture of that? Would be interested to see what you've done. With the aftermarket panel filters it just seems to me like they could just help the engine breath a bit better? Help a bit with economy a bit etc. probably completely wrong though.

I have pictures somewhere yes, ill post them up later on today, my car produced 222.30bhp, 285.65ftlb on one set of rollers and 233.50bhp, 254.00 on another so it's doing something right to give those figures obviously with supporting mods and software like.
