really wierd problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a really wierd problem at the moment, last night I went to lock the VRS with my normal key, and it appeared to have lost all range on the key. It would only lock when I stood almost next to the car. I tried the spare remote and the car locked fine and the range was back.

I thought the fob battery was flat so I got a new one this morning, but the key is the same, light on fob flashes, but no range on the key. Do these suffer from wandering from the alloted frequency, or is the fob fubar.

Many thanks for any help or suggestions.

Try re tuning the key, put the faulty one in the ignition, switch the ignition on, wind down the drivers window, close the door, lock it with your spare key using the key itself, reach in and press lock on the fob once wait few seconds and press again.

Also make sure you put the right battery in! Done that before put the old battery in by mistake lol

ahhh kent phil your only down the road from me!!

I had this very same problem a couple weeks ago. I took the key apart and there was some grub on the battery its selfs causing the connetion to be crap. simply picked it off with my thumb nail and its been sweet as a nut since then.

you have a time limit to do this (so said dartford skoda) before the fob looses memory. you have about 60 seconds.

I had this happen recently. Before I found cleaning out the inside of the con sorted things but it hasn't this time. Changing the battery hasn't helped either.

I haven't tried the re-pairing option, could be worth a go.

Cheers for all the replies, Gee-man, tried cleaning connections, and even a new battery, but still like a wet squib compared to the spare. I'm going to try and re-pair them tomorrow and see what gives. On a seprate note, I'm totally in awe of that car of yours Gee-man, certainly shows what can be done when you put your mind to it.

update - tried pairing the key today, but no difference. I seem to remember reading an old thread a while back about upgrading to a 3 button fob from ebay, but I seem to have found every thread but that one.

Can you reuse part of the old key with the new key?, and is there any substantial risk factor in doing this?. If some kind person knows of the thread i am talking about, I would be really grateful for a link please.

Does anybody know what causes this?, just concerned if I get a new remote that it does not go the same way.

Many thanks

Phil

My sister has the same problem with her Mk1 Seat Leon. Only opens by the remote if you are standing right next to the door. We tried re- pairing the key to the lock which didn't help. The local garage she took it to were of the opinion that it was a faulty CCU or receiver within the CCU and would cost £££s to repair so she's just had to put up with it for the last three years.

Did it a few months back, you need a key with the code starting with 1u I think NOT with 1k tho.

All you need to do is to swap the blades and the lil transponder that looks like a grain of rice. Then recode it the way you did today.

Mine was from a vw.

Only thing is spare key works from about 50 metres away, so it must be the fob I would have thought?.

Comparing the two fobs side by side the light on the crap one seems not as bright as the good one and doesn't stay on as long. Does seem to be an issue with the fob rather than the car.

Hi Raf_,

Does the little transponder chip come out fairly easy or is it quite fragile and easy to break?. If it is fragile is there a trick to it , or is it plain old just be careful and think before doing?.

Is there any one place on ebay that comes recomended or is it just take a chance?.

Many thanks for the replies everyone.

Just by chance m8, I got a decent one that can be described as brand new, looked like the spare was just put in a drawer and forgotten about lol.

The transponder is fragile but I found them really easy to remove, used the new one for practice. Think I used a lil screwdriver to gently lever it up and out. The hardest thing I found was removing the badge to get to the screw to split it lol

Hi Raf_,

Would I be correct in assuming the transponder chip is contained in the part of the fob that houses the key blade?. If so could I get something like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-3-BUTTON-REMOTE-KEY-FOB-VW-SEAT-SKODA-AUDI-GENUINE-PARTS-J10-959-753DA-HA-/270943029435?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3f157688bb

I know it may not be the correct frequency etc, was just using it as an example, I would hunt around for the right item if my idea would work. I was wondering if I could detatch the 2 button fob part, then plug the 3 button fob back into my original blade half -thinking less dismantling = less risk of breakage.

Is this feasable or am I just living in hope?.

Cheers for the help.

Is it possible for someone wo has done this mod to either confirm or torpedo my idea as listed above in post #13 please. If I am correct, would like to order the fob asap.

Many Thanks

Phil

Interesting on this one, took battery out of wifes one 6 months ago to change it, finally got round to putting new battery in it last week, worked fine, unlocked, locked doors from button and started car too.

think someone at skoda was telling porky pies....

Yup that will work m8, I only swapped transponders over due to my blade being loose and the fob being brand new lol

As far as i know any key from the vw stable starting with 1u will work. If you do a search there should be my original post on when i was looking for a fob a few months back
