Battery problem?

Featured Replies

Car wouldnt start after sitting for 2 days

Batt voltage was 7volts

Jump started it and its charging at 14.4v so im guessing alternator / load sensor is fine (also have batt symbol on dash)

So is battery kaput? Im holding off for the time being as i think it may be my new cd player as its only happened since ive put it in.... On installing the cd player i swapped the perm and switched live over... Yellow and red as you do with an aftermarket cd player? Is this just coincidence??

Could be the CD player... or a central locking fault.... are all the doors unlocking and opening ok?

If your HU looses its memory settings (radio statios, etc) when you turn the ignition off, then you've got the battey and ignition mixed.

Ever aftermarket HU I've every installed has required the red and yellow switched over.

When i did it originally i didnt swap the red an yellow and the car wouldnt lock! So it now as it should be with the red and yellow swapped over so it rememers settings etc. tbh its always sounded as if its stuggled to start.... Ive only had it 5 weeks so maybe sat at garage for a while?

Sounds like you may have had a lucky escape there - have you cut the VAG stero diagnostic wire which will connect upto an aftermarket HU's aerial remote power wire (via the din-plugs) - if not can fubar your central locking.

It blew the fuse lol!

Anyways battery changed and £120 lighter :o

Bosch baby now in 610a starting power compared to the 310a starting power that was in :o

I originally plugged the cd player into the oem loom then it wouldnt lock, then i looked in the box and there was a loom adaptor so used that and crossed the red and yellow bullet connections over

HOW MUCH!!

My car had been chugging a bit at startup over recent weeks and i could tell it was coming, sure enough on Sunday the car wouldn't start. Was the original battery in there so cant grumble with it after nearly 8 years of use.

Got the same battery from ECP for £55, paid about £5 for a long socket extension and a 13mm socket to loosen the battery clamp bolt and managed to fit it myself in no more than 30 minutes even with my extremely limited mechanical knowledge and propensity for knacking anything i turn my hand to.

Invest in a Haynes manual Jase, simple-ish jobs like this you can save a shedload on!

I could of fitted it myself but i really couldnt be bothered last night

Fitted my fmic last weekend so handy with the tools but it was late and i couldnt be fluffed

Its a bosch silverstar iirc.... Eurocarparts was closed and im working this weekend so just paid halfrauds prices, kept warm and dry too :)

310a

Definitely not the right battery you had in there

HOW MUCH!!

+1

Sorry dude, but you've been had there

Yup i think the garage i bought it off fitted one from a mini metro or summit!

Yeah havent we all been bummed at some time, needed car so took a bumming

Bad luck - been there, had the whole in the wallet :(

Mine did this yesterday, and I also installed an aftermarket headunit, along with Sub & amplifier last week. Car has been ok for a week almost, then after being sat for a day or two wouldn't unlock. After manually unlocking it with the key it will now lock/unlock drivers front, passenger rear door, and boot only. I get ignition lights, but the battery is flat as a pancake and the car will not even turn over. My clock has reset itself too, almost as if the car has had a power cut.

What's this about the standard diagnostic loom buggering up the CL? I wired the HU up so that it doesn't lose memory when ignition is turned off, but if I have the facia connected (even if it isn't switched on) it stays illuminated even with the ignition off. It's almost as though it has constant power going to it.

Have I broken something?

Mine is an Apline HU by the way, Alpine amp & Pioneer Sub. I've just read some Alpines cause issues like this in these cars!?

Basically, pin 3 on the iso plug on the headunit loom isn't supposed to be used for anything, but VAG use it for diagnostics on the headunit. It shouldn't cause a problem being connected to an aftermarket headunit until a diagnostic machine is plugged in, whcih it has been known to fry.
