lpg conversion

Featured Replies

Hi all! Been thinking about lg for a while. I have 1.8T, has anyone done that? how much did it cost and how about economy? Can you get more miles out of petrol then lpg?

Cheers

Mines been fitted for a while now and was done before I purchased the car

A few members have lpg conversions

You get slightly more mpg running on petrol however gas costs less, in some places nearly half the price per litre so in essence gas is the better option

I put £40 of gas in a fornight ago and 400 miles later it still hasn't switched back over to petrol, the light is flashing in fairness but I'll be gassing up tomorrow anyway

Seen a few kits fitted to volvos at work some of them are shocking and others look professional.

The multi injector kits look best and prob work best to altho they have a tendency to play havoc with engine ecus as lpg runs 16/1 air fuel ratio unlike petrol that runs 14/1.

There is plenty of room in spare wheel well for a gas tank to run system though

thanks for anwers. Isn't it more expensive to put lpg on if your car is turbocharged?

Not if you have a massive ice install fitted in there ;)

what's ice?

what's ice?

Err frozen water? lol

Soz couldn't resist! I.C.E stands for In Car Entertainment. Amps, subs, speakers and head unit

My dad got LPG fitted to his V6 Mitsubishi challenger a few years ago when there was plenty of small suppliers around but now he has to travel 10 miles out of Plymouth to get some so take that in consideration. You get two different types of set up the cheaper obviously lesser performance orientated the higher being more for if you like to redline it. Also you have to take consideration of spark plugs. LPG is a high octane fuel at around 116RON but doesn't give you more power as it combusts hotter unlike petrol which combust colder so you'll need a hotter range of spark plugs. And ICE stands for In Car Entertainment

Yes, they do have budget, standard, premium conversions :) So i should better look at premium, as difference between basic and premium is couple of hunder £.

I have lpg in my 1.8T 4 years, no problems whatsoever. Just do it

FYI: AFR is the same for petrol and LPG.

Ask the company installing what system they recomend for your car...

Shop around too

I get my gas from the local Calor depot, got two within 3 miles of my house and a petrol station (selling gas) in that distance to

I'd say go for it providing you plan on keeping your car....

I think the main difference between the standard and premium basically is the injectors. The standard would probably work work at 90%+ duty cycle at high revs where if it reaches over that your could be running really lean where as the premium will probably run half of that.

AFAIK :D

A couple of things on here that aren't quite right. Yes the Ron values are different and yes the AFR of LPG CAN be set higher which means that you can advance the timing a bit more without knock which CAN get you more power. But that requires a specialist mapper that understands LPG as well as your ecu. Most modern multipoint systems are a world away from the old style single point ones that used to backfire and blow up plastic intake manifolds. They have their own seperate ecu that piggybacks off the engine ecu so it takes the values the ecu is requesting for injection timing and squirt amount etc and factors it to the required values of the lpg system.

Spark plugs Should be 1 range COLDER not hotter. And LPG likes good old fashioned COPPER core plugs so don't waste money on iridiums as they won't improve your running. Ngk bkr7e is a good plug for gas.

I have had a couple of cars on LPG and in all honesty the E-Gas system that I have has not missed a beat in nearly four years. The difference between mileage on lpg or petrol is barely noticeable with good multipoint systems. When I first had my 4x4 on petrol I would struggle to average 30 on a tank. Converted to LPG and it was the same. Once I started down the road of replacing broken parts with "mods" got rid of all the boost and vac leaks and got remapped I can now get 45-50 mpg on a run at a steady 60mph. My overall fueling costs are averaging at 10-12ppm (lpg and petrol combined) with 1500-2000 miles a month mostly work but some play as well:D

If you do a lot of miles then it is a no brainier. Get converted. If you don't do so much but intend to keep the car forever then again get converted. The other alternative is to get one that is already done but you do need to be sure of the history of the car.

HTH

As mattovplymouth said. The big difference is the injection side of the system. If you are going to modify your car you need to let the lpg installer know what BHP level you are going for so they fit the correct size vaporiser

I paid £1500 all in inclusive of the vat service is £80 a year
