Today's Tinkerings (Opinions Needed)

Featured Replies

As I needed to check the oil today I started thinking about the ITG kit fitted to the car. A few people have said they can't see where the cold air is coming from behind the light and after looking closely it seems as though instead of a RAM affect the feed collects the air that circulates inside the engine bay.

After a bit of umm'ing and arr'ing and some help from the lady we've come up with the below :

This uses the OEM intake pipe that feed from the air box and connects unto the ITG kit which we are going to seal with some duck tape for the time being. What do you guys think?

Cold air is better than warm engine bay air! Nice work!

excellent work.

i wouldnt of thought you'd of been able to get it to fit around the battery

Thanks guys, it was a bit of a squeeze but we got there in the end!

Pictures of it finished :

Initial impressions :

We took it out just after, let it get warmed up and then tried it out for acceleration. Both of us felt that the power was not as fierce but much smoother than before which is much nicer. There also isn't as much noise from the filter as there was before but I'd rather have cold air getting to the filter than the sound of the BOV. The real test will be at Pod over the Bank Holiday weekend as long as the weather gets better.

That's looks a great improvement ;-) especially for those guy not wanting to change the battery for a smaller one. Nice one vrs powered, thumbs up!!!

I reckon you should show that to ITG and see if they can do a retrofit for the kit. Its like the Forge kit but with a bigger filter and ducting.

Thats similar to what i was planning when buildimg my own kit, i.e doubling the house back on itself bit instead of joing the old hose i was going to take it straight to the front grill where it would generate a ram effect as the standered feeed it quite obstructive

If I can say one improvement to that...

The bit that screws into the slam panel where the OEM hose clicks into isn't a straight flow into the pipe. If you unscrew and look you'll see that the air that flows in from the bonnet has to travel upwards over a curve before it gets fed into the pipework.

It's hard to explain but if you replace that with something like this ( http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/ducts-ducting-hose/demon-tweeks-rectangular-intake-duct (This fits as I have it hooked up with my intake))

That will create a direct ram effect. All you'd then need is some duct hose collars to create an air tight seal. Although you're better getting 70mm or 90mm heat shrink tubing as its the same stuff but you can get a meter length for cheaper off ebay etc

+1 and hopefully they will upgrade their kit

Cheers for all the responses guys, will be speaking with ITG, hopefully they can upgrade the kit to make this a possibility :)

Will also be looking into those parts Apmaman :) cheers for the links

I'm loving this vrs powered. Totally going to order one of these as soon as my bonus comes ;-) then hook it up similar

Cheers bud, im glad we could sort it this way

Would that restrict the air in anyway (as in volume) as its a 'narrower' pipe before getting to the ITG?

The OEM feed is not much smaller than the ITG intake so I'm not sure there will be much of a restriction but I will keep an eye on it :)

That's what I thought. I looked at this initially when fitting mine and concluded that ITG had gone via the headlamp because there is plenty of cold air there. After fitting the splitter, I did see from underneath the car, that there is lots of space for air to get into the engine bay at speed. Although, I know, a 'ram' of air would suit more ideally. The OEM feed pipe is quite a lot smaller then even the narrowed end of the ITG. Be interesting to hear from ITG about the testing they did and why they opted for the 'behind the battery' decision.

It's ITG's business to extract the very best performance for their CAI, so it's probably the best balance between performance & cost, without modifying the car (different battery, drilling or removal of panels etc) at all.

That then got me thinking about a possible route for direct air from the tray under the front bumper. I feel a 'scoop' of some sort could be fashioned and the original air pipe (be it with a little extension of the same diameter) attached to it.

When I get a little time, I'm going to have a go at this.

Jonny i would stay away from that idea mate, taking an air feed from under the plastic tray will suck up loads of water, dust and deberis etc from the road And this will block the filter up if not destroy it

Unless im thinking off a total diffrent under try from you

It just needs to redirect air tbh. I cant see huge amounts of water or debris getting up a length of pipe which then goes vertical into the engine bay unless you drive into a massive puddle at speed lol

Snorkelling much?
