Strange Tapping/Ticking sounds from the Vents

Featured Replies

My car has always done this, but I just ignore it and put up with it to be honest! My wife used my car the other day and said she was almost convinced there was a Mouse living in the dash - it is that sort of noise to be honest!

I haven't really investigated it yet, but the car does it at the same time everytime and it's basically a sort of sound of flapping - as if something was tapping against one of the vents.- It sounds like it comes from the centre console behind the vents?

It does it when you stop and have the car on idle, it does it 3-4 times then stops but to be honest you would only really hear it when stopped anyway.

Has anyone else ever found something like this? (Forums are often great for helping diagnose these sort of weird things so hoping I'm not mad and someone else has had it)!

It's normal, well kind of. It's the flap control motors hitting their limit and tapping. You can have their adaptations reset by someone with VCDS/ a dealer but I had it done twice and it still taps every now and then. I've learned to live with it.

There's an easy fix........ turn the radio UP lol

As above. It's the flaps adjusting to change the flow of air.

It's pretty normal as they can make small adjustments all the time and make a little noise.

They start to stick the older they get. Mine go mad for a minute from time to time as they try and adjust with air stopping and starting but settle down once they have moved a bit and worked out what position they need to be in.

Some get better with a climate reset. Turn the ignition to position 1, turn the centre fan speed all the way off so the climate is totally off. Hold down the econ button at the same time as the bottom left control of the airflow direction (4 buttons) . The unit will display some weird symbols in the 2 lcd displays and whilst you continue to hold these two buttons it will cycle through a reset procedure. This can eliminate the problem, sometimes not and it will come back!. It also effects all vw golf mk5's, vw eos etc.

Bottom left button for air distribution is the airflow to face/centre vents BTW.

Ooooh, didn't know you could do this. Will try it. :)
