My battle with mpgs

Featured Replies

Sort of a blog thread and just to make sure I'm not barking up the wrong tree.

1.9TDI ATD engine....just had the cambelt+water pump done. 86k, 10 years old. Was getting 45mpg on carriageways (fuelling calc...onboard was optimistic) and a coolant temp fault code. Would take 10 miles for the temp to hit 90, then sometimes would go back to 0 and slowly work back up again.

Changed the coolant temperature sensor, thanks to fabdarav's (I think) instructions on another thread. Quick 10 min jobbie. No fault codes, but after a 50 mile trip onboard says 40 mpg!

Oil change not due for another 3k....so I'm lead to believe it needs an intake manifold cleaning?

I saw a thread by moggytech here requesting instructions....and a bit of googling revealed this http://pics2.tdiclub.com/gwillie/VW/Sballintake/INTAKEMAN101b.htm

Engine looks similar....but being a noob I can't really tell. It's from a US forum...are TDIs across the pond different to the ones here? Looks like a big undertaking...

Just realised the washer fluid reservoir is on the opposite side....is it too different to follow for my ATD?

The 1.9 engines are all virtually the same basic design. The reason for the washer bottle change is simply that there's more room for it where it is in a Fabia, and that's a larger Golf engine bay. The washer bottle is also bigger (3L vs 2 in the Fabia). Ancillaries like that aren't too important though IMO, the "core" instructions for cleaning your intake manifold will be the same.

Thanks so much! That's the affirmation I was hoping for. Will post back once I get a few hours to work through all that.
