Rattling Noise

Featured Replies

As per a previous thread I am still trying to solve the rattling noise I get in 5th & 6th when accelerating.

Now conclusions so far are that it could be the DMF on its way out, however I dont get any of the other effects of a failing DMF that I have researched on here. Wouldnt the DMF rattle in all gears if its on the way out.

Secondly the turbo has been suggested however wouldnt that also rattle in all gears under acceleration.

So a couple of questions.

Firstly can the vRS turbo be shut off via VCDS (dont know if a turbo works like this) I know the car would be gutless but at least I could see if the rattle goes away to rule this out or not.

Secondly are there any linkages for example gear selectors that would be looser when in 5th & 6th so they could rattle and when in other gears they are tight so there is no play in them and cant rattle.

Thanks in advance.

Unplugging the MAP sensor on the top of the intercooler will cause it to go into limp mode and pretty much shut down the turbo.

One thing, when you're trying to accelerate in 5th or 6th, there is a lot more resistance to overcome before it can apply more torque to the wheels than there is in 2nd or 3rd.

So I guess this means it could be the DMF or Turbo as they work harder in these gears. Am I understanding this correctly.

At what revs are you accelerating in 5th/6th gear?

Anything below 1900rpm will cause some vibration really.

And as said above the gearing in 5th/6th is much higher than 2nd/3rd so the force required to turn the wheels is much greater so it will put more strain on the whole drivetrain of the car.

If you let the car idle, in neutral with the clutch up do you get a rattle noise that goes when you dip the clutch again?

Its any revs really, driving hard or just commuting it rattles as soon as you press the accelerator. I will check for a rattle at idle later when I go home.

So even if the revs are way past 2000rpm in 5th/6th it rattles? Obviously I understand trying this out may mean you are in excess of the speed limit! (depending which gearbox you have- long or short).

I hear it usually when just normally accelerating but its mostly noticable on the motorway cruising, even maintaining a constant speed or accelerating to overtake as soon as there is any amount of pressure on the accelerator it rattles and this continues irrespective of the revs (gone upto 3500 odd dont want to push it until I work out what the problem is) as soon as I release the accelerator the rattle stops.

Ok I just tried what was suggested and when the clutch is fully up there is no rattle, as I start to press the clutch I can hear a rattle and this rattle stays until the clutch is fully depressed at which point the rattle stops. So in short it rattles while I am pressing the clutch but not when I am off the clutch or when it's fully depressed.

Right I have come to the conclusion it must be clutch related so I am going to change the clutch and DMF.

Even if it doesnt solve it, it's a job that was on the list as current one has done 90k odd and planning a remap so it's not so bad to do it now.

So a few of questions.

The Sachs kit doesn't seem to come with a release bearing but they do a kit with a CSC is this the bearing.

Secondly how easy a job is it, I am pretty competent but never done a clutch and DMF before.

Lastly the cheapest place to get a clutch and DMF.

The car is a daily driver so I am not interested in going SMF and will only get a stage 1 remap in the future so it's not really necessary.

Thanks
