So Which Engine is it then?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I am trying to help my neighbour solve an irritating issue with his Fabia vRS and I need some advice from those in the know. I know that the EGR topics are plentiful on here so I'll try to keep this short and to the point.

We need to know which engine he has. I think it is ASZ but it is a 2005 '05 car which should be BLT? It is entirely possible that the car was built quite some time before being registered and have the early engine. The V5 shows the engine number as ASZxxxxxxxxxx but I don't know if those with BLT engines show differently or not (anyone able to clarify this?).

Also, the EGR is vacuum operated and I don't think that it has the anti-shudder valve.

I have had issues with stepper motor controlled EGRs in the past but never found vacuum ones to cause the MIL to indicate.

I'd be really grateful if anyone could clarify these points or post a pic of the differences between them so that we can be 100% sure.

There is a sticker on the cam belt cover also the sticker under the carpet in the boot. The same sticker will be in the service book. My VRs has a BLT engine and there is a vacuum control unit on top of the drivers side strut under the bonnet. It has an electrical connector and 6(?) vacuum hoses.

Are there any error codes on the ECU?

i find the easiest way to identify being either check on the cambelt cover it will say the engine code or if that is not there/you want to be sure, the blt engine will have the anti shudder valve next to the egr so if you dont have the anti shudder valve then its a asz engine if you want ill take a picture of it on my blt engine so you can be sure what it looks like

There'll be a big cooler on the back of the inlet manifold if BLT. ASZ will just have a single flexi metal pipe going down to the exhaust manifold.

It must be ASZ - I'll have a look at the cam belt cover etc though thanks.

We do have error codes, I have a small scanner and I think it is P0401 Flow insufficient (from memory). There is more to this fault so I'll spend a bit of time and put the detail in soon.

I am blobsters next door neighbour with the VRS and I looked in the boot to find the sticker which states it is has an ASZ engine. We have done a EGR delete on the car......but as stated above we get the P0401 code when we scan the car.

OBD II Code P0401

Insufficient EGR Flow

I've got a 55 plate car and mine's an ASZ, I don't think they really started with them until 06. But whatever the engine number is stated as on the V5 and the sticker under the carpet in the boot will be correct unless someone has swapped the engine!

If u have done a egr delete then you will get insufficient flow code from egr because it's blocked off. Fault code needs mapping out and can be taken out of ecu by unit 18, shark etc.

As said above. There is no EGR when the car is still expecting one so it is bound to throw up a fault.

i thought the asz engine wouldnt bring up a code just the blt ones? or do they both bring the light on but the asz can be removed with a vagcom and blt needs to be mapped out?

Asz can be mapped out, blt can't be.

mapped as in a remap place has to do it or just removed with a vagcom plugged in? Thanks to this thread i found out mine is an asz engine, always assumed it was a blt.

Mapped as in a remap place as far as i`m aware. I know you can turn down the egr on vagcom but not turn it off/delete the light.

Sorry - the quote button isn't working for me at present

Not sure why you think a 2005 '05 car should have a BLT engine. The change wasn't associated with the 2004 '54 facelift - it occurred sometime early in 2006. The BLT engine numbers are of the format BLTxxxxxx (at least mine is).

I won't risk trying to edit at present.

The BLT engine introduction was potentially at this time - quote from brochure downloaded 2/06:

From week 43, 24th October 2005 the Fabia vRS engine becomes EUIV compliant.

So "late 2005"

Code P0401 has the following probale causes:

1 Hose leak or blockage

2 Basic setting not carried out(if applicable)

3 Wiring

4 EGR valve

5 EGR solenoid

6 Electronic control module

Or someone's removed the EGR valve..lol

yes this is right. officially BLT engines were fitted from october 2005 so cars registered after that time should have BLT engines.

from september 2005 you have 55 plate so most of the cars on 55 plate or up will be BLT
