AUB or BBZ is there much difference?

Featured Replies

I know that the AUB engine was installed in the early fabias, and was later replaced with the BBZ engine.

But! were there many actual differences between the two. I know many people have said the AUB had many issues such as:

- Poor matching of the ECU and Engine

- Poor Throttle Response

- Constant EGR problems

- Poor Crankcase breathers/High Oil consumption

and many others.

but were these issues rectified when they changed it to the BBZ engine?

I know they are both rated at 74kW / 100bhp but were there any actual differences between the two?

I have the BBZ engine and can verify that Poor matching of the ECU to engine and Poor throttle response occurs with this engine.

'03 Fabia saloon with BBZ engine from new.

Engine wear apparent at 30,000.

Now 54,500. Slows significantly when going up long gradients. Main dealer says that there's no compression loss ?

Now uses a litre of oil every 600 miles. This loss seems to be more noticeable when filled with ordinary GTX.

Counter-intuitively and contrary to all the advice, I found that topping-up with full synthetic, which matches a later successor VW oil spec reduced oil consumption and it ran better !!!

But the main dealer insists on refilling with GTX at the annual service - or that's what it says on the invoice.

Had Engine stuttering (Clogged ECU - cleaned x 2 by main dealer). Now no more.

From new EU throttle damping a right pain, especially for take-off from roundabouts and junctions.

Runs better on French petrol and in French climate than over here ? Doh !
