I'm getting pixxed off with this car

Featured Replies

1.4 classic 2001. Did the temp sender today and the thermostat housing and new stat. Felt quite good as this is predictive preventative maintenance and on opening the stat housing the plastic clip bars had broken and the stat was in bits. Slapped in some new plugs as a treat for the car and started off down to Tescos. Beep, flashing temperature light although temperature gauge was at 12 o'clock. Then steering wheel lit up so I guess it's the steering angle sensor going intermittent and about to need replacing. Arrived at Tesco and as I stopped in the car park the airbag light came on. Great. Switched off and back on, just the temperature flashing. Did the shop, half way home I thought the dash illumination was flickering despite revs to 4000 and the steering wheel lit up again. Got home and thought hang on, no beeps or temperature sender light and at least the airbag light stayed off. (And I think I can hear a wheel bearing and the car has started to shudder on breaking from 70.)

Mechanical stuff I do fine. I've done the rear door seals, the wipers are up and running after fitting a replacement central electronics module although I can't get intermittent front wipe and my bonnet catch has no sign of a switch, four new tyres on, hatch rams replaced, left side mirror replaced, new wiper blades oil change and filters done. Bought a VCDS to help with all the oddities in the electrics and although I have helped out a friend with a golf VR5 and problem Jatco 6 speed autobox (Solenoids N91 and N92) I can't work out my own stuff.

I've done 200 miles in it today so battery is good. Although I have ignition light when I should I guess the DF wire needs bypassing with a good connection. The steering angle sensor needs doing. Possibly new discs and pads and a wheel bearing. Have I got every early Fabia problem in this car or are there any common Fabia faults I have missed out on?

Don't forget the console bushes, rocker cover gasket, corroded springs, corroded ball joints, failed drive shaft seals, play in the drop links, worn ARB bushes and the dash squeaks. Also good luck when you get to the fuel filter, I touched the screw on the plastic bracket and it and it crumbled so i've got to drill that out when I can be bothered. After you've sorted that lot you can tell me what comes next ;)

Also i'd agree it sounds like the angle sensor but for the sake of a few minutes check the battery and the fuse in the top of the battery box and the earth points first, they're free/easy, an angle sensor will set you back £98 after rebate (your local dealer should do it for this but if not ring Rainworth Skoda and they will).
