Help - Adding wires to CAN Gateway

Featured Replies

Car in bits at the moment :whew:

I am in the process of adding OE OPS rear parking sensors and have got to the CAN gateway to add the twisted-pair to connector.

Expected to connect to CAN Hi pin 16 and CAN Lo pin 6 but there are already wires in those positions!

What is already wired into these pin positions?

Anybody know if I should splice onto these or maybe they are redundant and they can be removed?

Or is there other positions I can put my wires?

As I said car in bits and any help to get sorted would be greatly appreciated.

Car is 2009 Octavia MK2 Limited Edition.

Pins 6 and 16 are the CAN drive connection. This is not point-to-point wiring. It is a bus.

Below are some of the items are on that bus...

Onboard power supply control unit

ABS control unit

Steering column electronics control unit

Automatic gearbox/mechatronic control unit

ECU

Airbag control unit

Headlight range control unit

Thanks for the reply, but does this mean I cannot splice into wires already in pins 16 and 6, or do I need to fit into different empty position?

Sorry if this is dumb, but was expecting pin 16 and 6 to be empty so that I could just fit new wires in.

What other positions could I fit the twisted-pair for the parking sensors?

Really stuck now

Free bump for you.

Hope someone can help out on this sunny day.

That single twisted pair, that is the CAN-Bus drive circuit, connects to ALL the controllers listed in my previous post. Think of it as a computer network, because that's what it is. It IS the CAN-Bus drive you need to connect to. The other positions are for different functions.

To do this job you must be able to solder well and must have the correct CAN-Bus wire.

Here are some general tips...

Use the correct wire

Do not untwist the wire

Both wires must be the same length

Any tap into the bus must be made at the same point on both wires - don't connect one wire and then the second wire a few cm further along - remove the insulation and solder, without cutting the wires.

Keep the drop wire from the tap as short as possible

Don't connect your drop wire to another drop wire - only connect to the bus

Make sure your tap is well insulated - if the CAN-Bus drive shorts out, your car won't run!

Thanks rwbaldwin, great info.

Thought I'd give it a try, and had already done the way you suggested and spliced into wires.

The car starts and drives, so guess I accidently did it correctly. :sun:

Just need to get the coding done for the rear parking sensors and all will be sorted.

Thanks again.

Coding now done for styler67 - did have an issue with getting the Bolero to show the options to adjust the volume settings (e.g. dipping the music volume when reverse is engaged, etc.)

As I'd not used the Bolero before I overlooked the button with the musical note in the top left corner. Styler67 found out that if you hold it in, you can access the menu that was activated (but not found initially) with VCDS.

Hopefully he's a happy chappy with his new reversing sensors and OPS display.

He just needs to drill the bumper and fit the sensors now. Good luck...
