Intermittent wipers not working.

Featured Replies

2001 fab 1.4 8v classic. All front and rear wiper functions otherwise normal.

I've read that they won't work with the bonnet open but believe this is a myth.

I can't find an electrical switch/sensor on my bonnet lock.

Can anyone with a similar car actually do a test and see if their intermittent works with bonnet open or not and if there is an electric switch/sensor take a pic to show where it should be.

I can't find any mention of this switch in the Haynes wiring diagrams either so far

Hi, could be purely a coincidence, but thought my intermittent wiper had packed up yesterday......got home and found the bonnet was not locked down....havent tried again since but hoping what you are saying is right and they only stopped as the bonnet was up! (never had problems before )

Surely a faulty bonnet switch would stop the wipers working on all settings, not just on intermittent. My guess would be a faulty wiper relay or faulty wiper stalk.

Ive had this happen to me and it was because my bonnet was open only stopped the intermitant working the rest worked fine so id try openong and closing your bonnet again see if that works of not check bonnet switch and fuse box as there are 3 fuses all for the wipers as far as i know

And the answer is.

There isn't a bonnet switch on my 2001 classic. Newer fabias or possibly old posh versions do have one and it does just stop the intermittent. Tried on two other cars.

That means the secondhand Electronic Control Module I bought off ebay has a duff circuit for intermittent wipers. Rats!

(Wiper functions are delivered from the ECM behind the dash on the driver side, controlled by the column switch. I'm assuming that intermittent is also controlled from the ECM with the column switch toggle/rheostat altering some solid state timer chip on the ECM which prompts a single wipe from the slow wiper relay on the ECM.)
