All my problems are over! ......... and the fun begins :o)

Featured Replies

Well, as some of you may know, on Friday past, I had 4 new coil packs fitted to my Octy VRS Mk1, and a Remap (Elite Remaps).

..... very quickly followed by a CEL Engine Warning Light, that has followed me around since :(

This evening, the guy who done my remap, kindly popped in and put the car on his VAG-COM ......... I had been hoping it was just the CTS (Coolant Temp Sensor) or maybe MAF ... nothing more serious I hoped.

The codes that came up, were actually (can't remember codes):-

- Cyl 1 Intermittent Misfire

- Cyl 2 Intermittent Misfire

At first, Will noticed that two of the wires that feed into the plug that goes onto the coils for cyl 1 & 2 were split, but felt this was unlikely to have caused the problem. I taped them up with electrical tape.

He cleared the codes and ran the engine and again, within 10 seconds or so of running, the same 2 codes.

So we took out Coils 1&2 and swapped them over with Coils 3&4 ....... ran the car; within 10 seconds we got the error messages but this time for Cyls 3&4 !!

...........so 2 of the new coils purchased on Friday were faulted. On inspection, WIll noticed that some black rubber that is supposed to be completely internal to the coil, near the joining point, half way down, was sticking out : didn't look right at all. When he got the coils for me on Fri, the supplier only had 2 left (grey topped) so got 2 more in for us that we had to collect 2 hours later; but noticed that these were black top ones, like the originals that had failed.

So, 2 replacement coils later, codes reset, and so far, NO ENGINE LIGHT! .......... happy days.

The moral of the story is, don't run crap 'patterned parts' or eBay copied parts in your car. ,............and when people on here say that even brand new, cheap copied parts can fail or not be working = they're right!

I got the coils exchanged no problem, but as I am still running cheap crap coils, I'll be replacing them with some genuine VAG ones ASAP, and keeping these as spares.

Car running beautifully :) ... and 44 miles without the CEL light coming back on, so I'm happy. I'm also happy now that the remap was not causing the CEL light in any way. Just these bad coils.

Thanks for all the help given, (across a few thread - sorry about that!), to resolve this problem.

Cheers.

Thanks very much Jase and STSKODA, but I decided to go for a set of the Red (Genuine VAG) ones from Awesome GTI (same as the ones you have on yours, Jase).... so just ordered them.

Cheers Za

You can get new coils under the recall campaign, never worth fitting cheap ones.

Nah I couldn't, I checked with Pulman Skoda; because the coils on the car when I got it weren't the originals and/or those with the part 'letter' that are being replaced. Fair enough.

But all sorted :)
