Driver's Door Lock

Featured Replies

Hi all.....Went to unlock the driver's door recently but it wasn't having any of it. Unlocked the car from passenger side (central locking). Car still locks from driver's side though. Has anyone else come across this or have any idea of cause and how to fix ?

As always any advice/info welcomed and much appreciated.

Regards Rob.

Mines been like that since I got the car. If you try and force it you'll snap the cam on the lock barrel and I've been through two cams in this way :( my local garage had the car for some other work recently and replaced the whole barrel (so now I have one key to open it with and another key to start it... classy :( ) but helpfully they completely failed to address the underlying issue which is why it keeps going "stiff" every now and again.

My guess is that the actual lock mechanism needs replacing or lubricating, but to be honest I can't be a**ed to take the door apart again so will just continue to open it from the passenger side when the drivers side doesn't want to play ball.

New barrel, from Skoda and made to fit the key......£20 ;)

Thanks, gents, for your replies .No force is necessary when attempting to unlock the door. The barrel is free but when the key is turned to the right to unlock the door nothing happens. The 'click' has gone !! Will have a look at it before replacing the barrel. Maybe something has come adrift or similar. It just packed in without any warning. One minute it worked and the next it didn't.

Wouldn't be so bad if I had more than one key or if they could turn it around in a day instead of two weeks :(

Ouch, it was a 6 week wait on mine 'cos it vas comink von der VW place auf Deutshland. (I forget exactly where). They didn't take the key as the lock number is on the computer. (as long as it still has the original locks) All they took was registration and proof of ID/ownership. I (still) only have 1 key for the truck.

Quick brain-short though.................could look for the remote unit for the central locking. About 20 min to install. ;)

Hi

I have the same problem. Did it work out fitting the new barrel. My new dimension is that recently after getting the car serviced the central locking has failed. I found the unit after having a look around on this website but my arms aren't the right shape to fit in that gap by the steering wheel.

Any advice on how to go about it without taking apart the dashboard?

Cheers

I bought mine with the twin-plane key for the door locks and the single-plane for the ignition. It's no real hassle.

Thing is, both of my door lock cylinders have knacked up, so they'll both unlock, but won't lock. I have to reach around from the back door and lock it using the knob, which can be a bit degrading when you look around a car park and see all these people with flash new cars with their fancy remote central locking and theres me stretching through the back door of an old banger to lock the doors.

Anyway, it's not easy to describe, on the lock cylinder there's two 'catches' as part of the casting. One locks it, the other unlocks it. On both sides of mine, the catch to lock has broken off, hence why I can unlock, but not lock. If a trip to the dealer and a lengthy wait thereafter is an inconvenience, you could always buy the entire lock set from Jorily for £80, or maybe you can pick a set up from eBay, though I dunno.

The only thing then is the amount of time it would take to take all the old ones out and fit the new ones. The door locks are a royal pain in the ariss as they're fiddly and space is limited, but easy enough when you know how. I wouldn't know about any of the other locks. Boot lock seems simple enough, Ignition a bit more hands-on.
