I'm buying a used 2008 Skoda vrs TDI

Featured Replies

It has 44000 miles. It is due a service. Dealer has agreed to change cambelt and water pump. He is a modest sized dealer dealing in all cars. My question is how will I know he has actually changed belt and water pump? And used good oil and filters to service it? He could tell me he has done it and actually do nothing or next to nothing? Is it a trust thing. Am I too sceptical. Thanks

Is it from a Skoda dealer.

You should get all invoices of any work carried out but if your really wanting to make sure he does do the work your paying then ask for invoices. And no your not being skeptical, don't trust dealers

Get them to show you the bits he's taken off unless he's got lots of vRS bits lying about, it'll be fairly conclusive. You're right it's a trust thing - do you know anybody who's used the garage before ? Does it come recommended ?

Abarth no he isn't a skoda dealer. He sells diesel cars. Has 70 plus stock. He seems reputable enough. Paul noone had recommended him. I was concerned because he just didn't seem to have a decent Garage setup from what I could see. I live in Northern Ireland. Ther aren't many vrs's about here. They ate all sourced by dealers from mainland. All ex fleet cars. The one I'm after is keenest priced by far for NI standards and has low miles for 2008. I think getting him to show me parts is excellent idea :-) thanks for replies guys

Hiya, Is it a PD engine or the CR (common rail) engine? The CR was introduced mid 2008, Injectors are a known issue among other things with the earlier PD engine. Have a search on here for issues.

Hi Dave. Mot expires in jan 2013 so I'm presuming it was Jan 2008 model and therefore a PD. I test-drove a 2009 vrs TDI and I must say it felt alot pokier in the lower gears than the 2008 I'm getting. I test-drive the 2009 one in local roads which I'm very familiar with and I drove it hard. The 2008 one was in unfamiliar roads and I didn't drive it as hard. It felt a little dead on third but came alive from fourth gear up

That's odd as the pd should feel a lot faster are u sure u havnt it the wrong way around!

And used good oil and filters to service it?

As the vRS has a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) then make sure he uses VW 507.00 long life oil.

Yeah I hav it right way around. I think maybe it was how I was driving it tho as it was a Saturday, moderate traffic, urban roads and unfamiliar roads. It just felt like it was hitting a little dead spot in lower gears but maybe I wasn't giving it enough wellie :)

Dealer selling the 2008 one also suggested that maybe the 2009 was remapped. It's a possibility. We hav the 140 bhp TDIs in work and they felt similar to the 2008 PD. The 2008 170 PD was obviously faster than ones in work tho
