Bumper painting diy or professional? OR best to replace?

Featured Replies

Hi all. My little red fabia has started to flake on the front bumper which is sad. In fact when I removed the front number plate there isn't any paint left behind it! It's coming off in what I can only describe as shards leaving the grey plastic of the bumper behind! Seems to be a product of the previous owner parking carelessly. Pics below but what do people think is my best option, strip the whole bumper and respray or touch up (not sure how given the way it's chipping. Or has anyone got a red VRS bumper kicking about?! Could do a upgrade! (If I did this could I use the fog light trims out of my classic as my classic doesn't seem to have the wiring for fogs.). How much would I expect to pay for a bumper respray?!

Bumper looks like it has already been resprayed..... very badly!

Bumper respray isn't expensive, but you want ot make sure they sand it back to get rid of the current lose paint, prime it with the correct flexible primer for plastics and then paint it.

That looks like it's already had a respray, and not so well, as the black trim has red paint all over it.

In that state, you'd want a new reg plate holder surround or get that one removed, painted correctly and attached once the bumper etc is dry.

I assume it has been sprayed, it was a cat d and had frontal impact but then after that it seems someone hit something in a car park cracking the fairly poor paint job it had. You mentioned it wouldn't cost too much, any rough guess' on how much? Would expect to remove and prep myself to keep costs down.

I was quoted £140 to remove, and paint bumper and then re-fit etc.

A friend of mine was quoted and paid £150. 3 garages in close proximity quoted identically

Prices sound reasonable. Didn't want to go into looking for quotes locally till I had an idea in mind of what it might cost. I'm in two minds over whether to spray or not. I know I can pick up a scrap for around £65 however the condition isn't guaranteed and the chances of finding one is very very slim. Has anyone fitted a vrs front to a classic on here?! How did you get around the fog lights? Although having asked that the chances of finding a vrs in the scrap yards that's red and hasn't been stuffed up tree is rather slim I'm guessing!

Whoever re-painted that bumper wants to go to specsavers. You can fit a VRS bumper, guessing you have to just run abit of extra loom to switch and get a new switch? At a guess.

Just put a vrs one on and don't wire up the fog lights? Only one of my foglights worked so I took the broken one out to fix it and havnt replaced it since. No big issue

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Still have found any scrap ones with a none squished front end. Anyone spotted one at their local scrappy?

Where you from bud?

Leeds! So there's a fair few yards around but none with a red vrs bumper!
