How much can you tell about which engine is in the SM from an outside glance? So far I've only seen three different badges; the TDI / TSI 4X4s and the Greenline.

Is there an external difference between the 1.2 & 1.4, or between the three TDI 4x4s? I've seen mention of the bigger brake size in the 170, but I've not yet seen two together to compare.

With the Diesels it is in the badges-the 140 has the "i" and the "x" in red Tdi 4x4. Less red for a 110, more red for a 170, unsure of the exact details but that is the system.

With the diesels:

TDI all silver = 110bhp

Red I = 140bhp

Red D and I = 170 bhp

1.2 TSI has no badge and a single exhaust pipe (later from MY11), 1.4 TSI has a silver TSI badge and a twin exhaust pipe set-up.

Well I've never noticed the red x in 4 x 4, just had to go out and have a look. Sure enough TSi 4 x 4, on mine.

Oh also check the chassis number;

5th digit - Engine type:

B = 1.8 ltr./112/118 kW/petrol engine

C = 2.0 ltr. TDI/81 kW/diesel engine

D = 2.0 ltr. TDI/103 kW/diesel engine

E = 2.0 ltr. TDI/125 kW/diesel engine

F = 1.2 ltr./77 kW/petrol engine

J = 1.4 ltr./90 kW/petrol engine

T = 1.6 ltr. TDI/77 kW/diesel engine

How about 1.2tsi/1.4tsi/CR110/1.6CR elegance models then? ie 2WD models.

That makes my CR140 an early 1.2TSi then :lol:

I have none of those boot lid badges other than Yeti.......

The TDi red lettering decoding has been used across VAG for years; you can decode mine from my signature!

170 CR 4x4 and 1.2 Tsi DSG. Both Elegances. One has noticably bigger front brake callipers.

Thanks for all the info - I never realised there was any significance to the red lettering in TDI. My '03 Octy has a red I but is only a 110HP (though at the time it was the top option for the 1.9).
