Suspension noise please help

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. For a few months now I've had faint knocking noise coming from my car, always at very slow speeds, usually when cornering.

I've been to my local mechanic several times recently, I've replaced four of five suspension parts on the front and had new Sachs shocks fitted on both ends, each time hoping that this knocking stops only to find its exactly the same.

This is very hard to describe being a non mechanically minded person but the general feel of the handling and ride of the car have been greatly improved by the new parts but there's this sort of underlying rattling to the whole thing which is so faint that passengers can't hear it, and this knocking when cornering at a constant radius at slow speeds.

I'm starting to suspect that I may have some dual mass flywheel issues after reading a few posts here, could this be the cause of the noises ?

Can anyone suggest any other suspension components that might be suspect other than the suspension arms, shocks I've already replaced ?

I'm fairly certain this noise is not coming from the front suspension though...

Cheers guys...

I had knocking noises when I changed the front pads and the offside pads were fitted to nearside and vice-versa. Because they are handed, but isn't that obvious, especially if you don't read the user manual (like me!). Just mentioning this in case you have had pads replaced recently.

Does the knocking noise speed up/slow down depending on the car speed. If so then I would suggest CV joint.

Usually best to replace a driveshaft as a whole. It is usually the outer joint that fails but inner joints can fail especially the one above the exhaust. The extra cost of the driveshaft can be offset by the extra labour costs associated with stripping down a driveshaft to replace a single joint.

It's very faint and gone very quickly, 2 or 3 faint knocks as I come out of a corner so it's hard to judge if it speeds up or slows down.

It sounds like its coming from behind me and nearside if I had to guess. I haven't had any new pads recently, just lots of suspension arms.

Thanks for your replys guys...

Still could be a CV joint . Wear show up at low speed especially on lock - but not always.

Ok that's something I'll get checked, thanks for the info...

I think you may have been right about the drive shaft, since your advice I've tried cornering out of gear just coasting and I'm yet to hear the noise whilst doing this.

I assume this lends weight to the cv joint theory ? I guess I should have thought to try this before. Many thanks for your advice.

Should I be sitting down or drunk or both when I find out what it's going to cost ?

Mine was about £180 for a new driveshaft - fitted

Ouch. Ok. Thank you for the advice..

I'd be interest to hear what it was, as I think I have the same noise. Rapid knocking as the wheel passes about 10 o'clock when coming out of a turn. Sounds more like a grinding noise at higher speeds. Sounds like it comes from the passenger footwell area, and there is some vibration through the floor, but not through the steering.

Only does it when under load, no noise or vibration when freewheeling. I've also found that it dissapears if you put more lock on.

I suspected a CV joint, but there is no noise at all at full lock - could it be at a very early stage?

Mine was a CV joint - near side outer. Replaced it with a GKN one, which was £50 less than the VW one. £98 for the part, and half an hour to fit.

Fine so far.

Hey people I had same problem and I want to share with you.

I also replaced with GKN, and for now(knock a tree)it is very good.

In my country OEM Skoda Superb Cv joint cost 550 euros for one, and I needed to replace both..I didnt wont and had 1000 euros, and I bought GKN, for now I didnt regret.

They are prety good, like first OEM.

cheers
