Faulty new car, what care my rights or your suggestions?

Featured Replies

Hi all, after driving my lemon of a Skoda Octy for two years with varoius faults (which I loved other than the on going faults) I jumped ship and bought a brand new Peugeot 508.

It is not even 1 week old and has done 110miles but on day one had a fault with the electronic parking brake not auto releasing and at the same time the hill assist being 'unavailable'. I took the car back to the supplying dealer who logged the fault, confirmed the was reading a faulkt code and 'reset the parameters as per Peugeot'. Suprise suprise two days later the fault returned and lights are flashing on the dash and the handbreake is faulty. i took a photo of the lights and messeges the dash were telling me this time. The fault clears if you turn the ignition on and off a few times enabling safe moving of the car. Its now Sunday, my wife is a 9days overdue with our second baby and I need a car i can rely on.

The service dept are closed as its sunday but the sales are open.

What are peoples thoughts (other than the obvoius 'dont buy a Peugeot')! I seem to attract Friday 13th nightmare cars! Aghhhhh!

You have all your consumer rights, sale of goods etc,

but thats for during the week to sort out.

If those Sales People are the ones that are the same as sold you this 'liability!, 'THat is not fit for purpose',

i would call in today

& explain your personal situation & ask if the vehicle can be left today to be taken into the workshop tomorrow for attention & inspection.

I would want them to Lend a Demonstrator or Courtesy car today.

??Is there no 'Peugeot Care scheme' that you can call to have the vehicle Recovered in the event of Break down, and courtesy car provision?

I understand your family needs no are important.

ME personally,I would, if not helped today by the sales people.

Park the car outside the Showroom or on the road locked up securely,

a few blown up baloons in on the dash & 'big stickers' in the window,

saying.

'THEY SOLD ME A LEMON AND HAVE LEFT ME STUCK

OUR NEW BABY IS 9 DAYS OVERDUE AND THIS PUEGEOT GARAGE WILL NOT HELP US, JUST LEAVING US WITH A FAULTY CAR'

(I would hire a car & be persuing them during the week to pay the cost of that.)

I would phone the local press to tell them about this car outside a local garage

& take pictures and post it all over the internet showing the Peugeot Dealers Name.

Should not need to come to that though, appeal to their human kindness today and see what happens.

All the best with this and Congratulations when the baby comes.

Thanks for your reply, its much aprreciated.

They, to be fair, were good the fist time. The service dept put me in a 5008 and not just a small 3 dr hatch. Im just so dissapointed as I got rid of the old car due to its on going faults only to have sat into another.

The dealer is about 45 mins drive away so think I will phone them first before taking the trek.

Peugeot do have the same as Skoda assist but feel this may be pointless as the car (with a few ignition on/offs) is drivable and they would only tell me to go to the dealers on Monday morning.

I just hope its a tetthing problem as other than this issue the car is a peach.

Thing is then you have to drive it untill it does not drive.

If it did conk out its a case of getting in a Taxi & recouping costs off the Dealership.

Or if time getting that Peugeot Assist assistance.

Hopefully they are very nice people and can 'Help You out today', under the circumstances that you are going to be busy during the week.

'One of those Salespeople should take your car home tonight and give you the Demonstrator they are driving daily!'.

Then they will know tomorrow what needs deaing with.

That is good 'Customer Service'.

All the best with it.

It's a tough call and as you say, it may just be teething problems that once sorted, will leave you with a great car. It's probably worth using Google (other search engines are available) to see if any of these are common faults with the car that are unlikely to be successfully resolved. Ultimately, the car is under warranty and so the only cost will be your time and inconvenience, which you may be able to be compensated for if you kick up enough of a stink with Customer Services.

If you want to go down the route of rejecting the car, Honest John has some good info here -> http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/ I believe before the car can be rejected, the dealer has to have reasonable opportunity to make it good, although this may not apply to a car that has faults from the outset. Lots of info out there and CAB should be able to give advice too.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply and input. Ive googled and googles but with it being a reletivly new model and numbers in the UK low, there is not a lot (in English) on it.

Ive phoned the dealer who was helpful and offered me his own car, but I would need to sort insurance out and they would reimburse me. I could not be bothered with the hassle to be honest but there offer was noted. Its going in at 8.00am tomorrow and a member of sales is going to be there to greet me and make sure a courtesy car is available.

We shall see what happens.

Miffed!

To be honest they havnt had enough time to make good the faults, I would take it back to them on Monday and say its still faulty and you don't want it back until it's sorted, if it keeps doing it you'll probably find they'll exchange it, that's what happened to a mate of mine who had a Mazda 6.

I know someone with a 508 and they are brilliant cars, I think I may have a look at the estate in a couple of years when I come to change.

The dealers offer sounds good at first till you realise that almost if not all insurance company's are closed on a Sunday and half day on a Saturday lol

They have to give you a courtesy car until this is fixed properly, with them testing it properly over a few days to make sure the fault is fixed.

I feel for you with the baby overdue. Our second was 12 days overdue and every day was a nightmare of nerves, and that was with a good-as-gold Superb, never mind a temperamental Pug.

Good luck with the car and the baby :)
