failed speaker replacement

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Completely out of the blue this morning, a 'rattle' appeared. Difficult to identify where from when there's no one else in the car to listen - but then I realised it stopped rattling when the stereo was turned off, and came back when the stereo was turned on again !

The culprit is the large speaker in the front passenger door.

Now I've no problem with taking the door card off, but is it just a simple case of unscrewing the old speaker and putting in a new one?

In other words, is the speaker a standard fit that can be replaced with any generic speaker of the right size - or will it need a specific speaker (ie from VAG) or specific mounting kit etc.

If a generic speaker fits, what size?

I'm not interested in 'upgrading' as such - the standard OEM gear is quite good enough for me and my music

I've done a search on this, but the points I'm asking don't seem to have been definitively addressed...

In short - to simply replace the speaker with one that doesn't sound like it's got an angry wasp in it, what do I need?

cheers

Funny enough my front passenger door speaker has a nice fart sound when it's turned up so this post can help me out too :) does the door card have to come off though or does the grill pop off?

I have something similar that I've heard a couple of times, which seems to be a loose connection in the door jamb connector. Manipulating the rubber grommet a bit was enough to get rid of it for me (for the moment).

To answer your other questions - to use aftermarket speakers properly you need a mounting ring and an adapter cable, though of course if you're prepared to hack wiring you can get away without the cable, and there are people who make the mounting rings themselves out of wood either for cheapness or sound quality improvement over the plastic adapter rings.

I've seen these speakers on ebay recently, I believe brand new, but there is a difference between the ones for amplified and non-amplified stereos I think so worth checking the part number on the ones you have.

amplified? non-amplified? I knew this would start to get complicated.

I've got the OEM double din sat nav MFD1. I'm guessing that's... non-amplified.

Or amplified.

Maybe. :(
