Need help wiring in dash cam to permanent live

Featured Replies

I recently purchased a BlackVue dash cam which I'd like to wire in to be permanently live via Power Magic Pro (discharge prevention device) - got a quote for fitting but that worked out at £80+ which seemed steep so thinking of DIY'ing it but I could do with a little help.

The wiring instructions that came with the Power Magic Pro are shown in the two attached images. Looks like the red wire should go to a switched live fuse and the yellow wire to a permanently live fuse...? So once I've located suitable fuses (will check the fuse box diagram), I'm assuming I'll need some kind of fuse tap such as this:

Will this do the trick?

Thanks!

Not seen that fuse tap thing before - that's a good idea.

TBH its not really needed. I have my garmin permanently wired into the car - i took a switched live feed out of the fuse box just by pushing in a spade type connector. If I can work it out it can't be hard as I'm a complete mechanical numpty.

Thanks Rob....glad I'm not the only mechanical numpty round here!!! ;)

So did you just locate a spare switched live slot in your fuse box and stick the spade connector into that then?

Yes. Spade into a spare fuse slot, and earth to a nearby metal bolt, easy peasy. First slot I tried was permanent live, second one was switched which was what a wanted.

OP I have one of those piggy back fuses, I suppose both work but it's already wired up so I went with the easier

Can you remember which number slots they were you tried...?

And is it risky not going via a fuse? Not that the BlackVue draws much juice I spose...

When you use the piggy back fuse, does the the piggy back itself act as a fuse? As in, if you use it in a slot that originally had a fuse in, can you just remove that fuse and stick the piggyback in it's place? Or do you have to put the original fuse into the piggyback as well?

(Probably a dim question but I'm not exactly Mr Practical! :p)

Looking at the picture there are two fuse slots, one for the fuse you removed and one for the spur.

Hardwired my Novus Rider to a switched live yesterday using a piggyback. Can't remember the exact slot number but it was a spare one, left as you look at it, next to a red 10!

There's a T20 screw at the bottom of the fuse box that you can use for an earth.

I have used one of these piggyback fuse connectors with no issues. I needed a 12v supply for my TV Antenna. I piggy backed off the lighter fuse. Just take out the original fuse, place the piggy back in. The first slot is for the original fuse and the second is for your new piggybacked feed. It's easy to try on the lighter fuse as the lighter will either work or not work so you can trial it out.

In the pic above, under the blue 15s is a red 10. The empty slot to the left of that one is a switched live.

Just had my Blackvue arrive today. Less than 2 weeks from china. Got quoted 3-4 weeks. Hoping to get it up and running before I drive to Brugges tomorrow.

I'm struggling for time at the moment so you'll probably get yours fitted before me! ;-)

How do you like it?
