More problems... Electrical

Featured Replies

It's one thing after another at the moment.

Now got an electrical gremlin!

Basically sometimes we get in the car and it unlocks fine then as you turn the key everything lights up and works as it should but then goes off within a few seconds. No power.

A quick whack of the battery box and it clicks back on.

This has also happened while driving a couple of times. Once sat in traffic. The car started to beep and the dash lit up like a christmas tree and the engine started to "chug" and eventually cut out and all power had gone. Couldn't even switch the hazards on. A quick whack of the box and all was well.

It then happened while reversing into the drive. Engine cut straight out and no power.

I've had a look at the connections and nothing dodgy looking. It just seems weird that the power goes completely. The clock and mileage display disappear so surely if it was a dodgy connection there would still be some power.

Is there a relay or something on the battery box. Couldn't see anything.

Phil

Ahh mine had similar problems to this, even cut out a few times while driving. All lights, steering etc - great at night!!

The earth lead was corroded and causing too big a voltage drop to power the car.

Cost about £15 from the dealer, took 10 minutes to replace, and has been fine since.

First thing though before you go replacing parts, double check that all the battery connections are done up nice and tight, might not look obvious from a quick glance.

Will take them off and re-check the connections then.

They seemed fine but that doesn't mean nothing.

It's weird that the power just cuts off completely. Almost as if it trips something out.

Many Thanks

It sounds like a bad battery to me. Next time it happens, connect a voltmeter direct to the terminals.

Also, check the main terminal 30 fuse link at the battery is not loose or cracked.

Thanks. Will do!

Also this isn't related to the broken alternator signal wire as that has already been fixed many months ago.

I have suspected the battery/leads for a while as we get the power steering warning light on from time to time. Either first thing on a morning or when dry steering (max current for the pump?)

Phil

You are loosing the permanent supply, so it's a very short list.
