'Clunk' When Changing Gear

Featured Replies

Hi,

Not sure if this is a common occurance, a design issue, or just our car?

When changing from 2nd to 3rd, there's a 'clunk'.

It's not a mechanical sound, but more as though the lever is hitting the gate, or the shift-cable is flexing & hitting the sides of the floor-pan (or wherever)

Ditto. I just take it as a reassuring sound to say Im in gear properly :)

Hey, Normanton - snap. :)

On my Fabia this was an engine mount under the battery that needed lubricating. Known issue. On the Octy though I can't say I've noticed it.

Thanks, will ask around. I know one of the owners of 'Fleet Taxis', so will have a word there & see if it's something his drivers have commented on (& fixed?)

Normanton?

Yes, I live here, but are not from the town (I was born/bred on the other side of the Calder; Stanley)

Was going to ask the same question in the Yeti section but accidentally found it here :) I can hear a clunk when changing gears in my Yeti. Had the same 'clunk' in my previous car which wasn't a Skoda.

I've not lived here that long either really. Well, 9 years. From Scarborough originally.

Re the issue, normally a clunk when changing gear is an engine mount. Happened on 2 of my cars now, one a Skoda, other a 4 pot BMW. Skoda needed lubrication, BMW needed replacement.

In my case I guess the sound comes from the differential which by design has some play. You will hear this sound if you jack up one of the front wheels and try to swing it back and forth.
