Pickup Gearbox..Help Required

Featured Replies

I have a 1.9D Pickup,The gearbox is very sloppy, almost feels like its in neutral when in any gear,Left to right movement is pretty bad.

This is the second truck ive owned & it was the same on that 1 too,Is this a common problem(or just a sign of a well used gearbox...

Is this a case of the gearbox mounts/bushes or the linkages,

Whats my best route for curing this problem........& is the gearbox a direct swap from a felicia hatch/Estate to the pickup...

best person for this to ask is, IMO TeflonTom, usually to be found in the Felicia forum ;)

Hi, I've had my pick up for around 4 years and now showing 103k. Like most Fellys I've owned there is a degree of free play in the box but it's never caused any problems & my current old girl has been great apart from she's pobably a little more whiney now, 50k on. By comparison the Felly boxes seem typically tighter than the Fav's, based on personal experience. I prefer mine comapred to driving the wifes Fabia, but that's more to do with clutch set up.

Linkage. Easily sorted - about £10 if you want to DIY weld a fiesta or similar steering joint in its place (half hour job, works a treat, much more positive than original), or about £30 if you buy a new linkage if you can find one..

the gearbox can't be sloppy, unless the gears and bearings are all dancing inside :)

but that's just semantics.

anyway, your shift mechanism is sloppy. jack the car, put it on stands, look under for play while a friend is shifting gears.

then you'll know if:

- there are loose screws - tighten them to torque

- there are loose couplings - buy a kit or do your own teflon bushes and brass pins

then your (gear!) shaft will be stiff

9 times out of 10 its the linkage worn OR the rollpin which joins the linkage to the selector shaft, the odd one has a broken rollpin on the selector relay inside the box.

the diesels usually jusy shake the bushes apart in the linkage tho so easily fixed.
