Rear door seals and inadequate drainage

Featured Replies

I've finally got around to sealing the rear door carriers after a year or so of smelly soggy carpets. Great guides and a

have been a great help.

I cant however help but think that the pathetic drainage arrangement - two tiny holes up via the narrow space between the outer skin and bottom of the door are not up to the job, and likely to be, at best, partially blocked by the congealed dust/dirt that finds it way into the door. Judging from the amount of water leaking past the seals, I am pretty certain that water builds up to a very high level internally, over the level of the seals, and I've not seen any water coming out of those tiny drains.

Does anyone agree it would be a good idea to drill a drain hole under the door to provide more immediate drainage? The question is where is the best location?

Drainage is not the issue, the facts that the carrier protrudes into the door and the water runs down the carrier and then down onto an inneffective seal, coupled with the simple fact that the joint is not overlapped to make it waterproof ('watershedded' I think the term is?) - these are the issues. The doors don't fill with water, the water just seeps into and then past the foam seal after is has run down the carrier.

Before I fixed mine I used wire to clear any blocked holes, all were clear and there was never any build up inside the door. Its a simple design fault.

Whats needed is a window sill type arrangement inside on the carrier so the water drips into the bottom of the door and misses the joint - a guy with a Seat put some very clear diagrammes on here somewhere..................

Thanks for the insight.

You can clear the drain holes quite easily anyway. Use a small screw driver or something and poke it through the hole.
