Uninstalling AVG from Windows XP Mode

Featured Replies

My PC is running Windows 7 Professional and I also have Windows XP Mode installed so that I can use Quicken. I recently unistalled AVG Free 2012 from Windows 7 - I am replacing it with Avast - but it is still present in Windows XP Mode and I can't work out how to uninstall it from there. It is is no longer listed as installed in Programs and Features so that route is not available to me. Can anyone help please?

don't you have to uninstall it from within xp mode?

Yeah, probably Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and find it in there. XP Mode is basically a full virtual computer (with a couple of fairly minor limitations) so has its own set of installed applications.

But how do I access Control Panel in XP Mode? The XP Mode desktop has icons for IE8 and Recycle Bin, and shortcuts for WMP. browser Choice, Quicken and AVG. The taskbar has buttons for Action (full screen, sleep etc), USB (to attach devices), Tools (Disable integration features, and Settings), and Ctrl+Alt+Del. I can access Control Panel from the main Wiin 7 desktop but that doesn't give show programes installed in XP Mode.

When I tried XP Mode, I'm sure it had the full XP Start Menu, in which case you would go onto that to find the Control Panel. If it's not there, try creating a new shortcut pointing to C:\Windows\System32\appwiz.cpl and then double-click the shortcut.

Unfortunately I don't have access to the C: drive from XP Mode to enable me to put that shortcut on the XP Mode desktop. But it worked a treat for Win 7.

ok, just for clarification, did you install AVG inside XP Mode or did you install it on Win7? C: should still be accesible within XP Mode: Start> My Computer C: will be listed under 'Other'. If you did install it within XP Mode, you'll need to run the virtual machine and uninstall from within there, as you would a standalone XP machine. It may still show as present in add/remove programmes in XP Mode, click it to uninstall and you may get the message ',,,,,has already been uninstalled, would you like to remove it from the list?' Click Yes.

Thank you all for your advice. Sometime in the past I opted to hide the taskbar at the bottom of the XP Mode window because it was intruding on Quicken's automatic calendar when selecting dates at the end of a month. When I reduced the window size just now prior to copying and posting what I could see, the taskbar - and Start button - suddenly appeared when I used the snipping tool. So all sorted now and yes, I did have a separate AVG installation in XP Mode. I live and learn.

glad you're all sorted
