coolant problem

Featured Replies

I'm having problems with my coolant obviously as that's what the title says. I'm loosing coolant not drastically but enough to have to top it up every week. I think that is coming from the water reservoir and is not the main problem. The main problem is when the car is warm the coolant level goes down. The coolant light came on when I was coming home from work today and when I pulled over to top it up (with the engine off obviously) I opened the reservoir cap slowly to let the pressure out and the coolant went from below the minimum to just under the maximum. Has anyone got any ideas what the problem is?

cheers in advance

anyone

your true reading will be when the engine is cold. Where is the level sitting before you start it on a morning?

I know this, it sits just below the maximum (loosing a bit off coolant as I said above) but the coolant warning light comes on, occasionally, during a drive. So I stop and open the cap and it goes back up to where it was. I am really confused as to what is causing this.

Did you resolve this issue? I'm having this problem at the moment.

Possible air in the system

Wouldn't opening when warm and the re-sealing me that when cold you've created a vacuum? To get a true reading not only would the car need to be cold, but you'd need to loosen/remove the cap again before you check you're level.

Exactly as sausage roll says. Check the hoses, water pump, clips and radiator for leaks. Also the condition of the hoses. Could be worth changing the coolant and refilling the cooling system per the book to enusre that there is no trapped air.

If it's non of these then have the system checked for a head gasket failure.

Have you tried having the heater full on for a long spell to check that it works and is not full of air?
