In case any one needs to know, i have found out how to top up the automatic gearbox oil on my Octy, after a faux pas i made draining the engine oil. Wrong plug basically :rolleyes: .

The gearbox oil has to be at approx 35 degrees C, and run through the gears a few times, as if checking with a good old fashioned dipstick. With the engine RUNNING, in PARK, remove the plug in the bottom of the gearbox with a 5mm allen key. Let any excess oil run out till it stops. This is the correct level. If no oil runs out, top up through filler as below, and run through process again. Obviously this is done on level ground, or stands front and rear.

There is a red cap down by the starter motor which seals the oil filler cap. I don't think the red cap is necessary, just an anti tamper device for warranty claims etc. I fitted a new one anyway. Remove the gearbox sump guard to get access..

This red cap has to be broken off. Under the red cap is the black oil filler cap. Gently release the securing clips, they could break off, and remove. I fitted a length of pipe, approx 1 metre, into the filler, and a small funnel into the other end, above the engine bay for ease of filling.

No special tools needed, apart from some kind of thermometer to measure the oil temp. Fitter said that you should just about be able to hold your hand on the gearbox sump, when at the correct'ish temp. :confused:

I will take the car in to be checked properly, and try to watch exactly what he does, and what tools he uses. I needed to do something with mine before i could get it to the garage.

Red cap part # 01M 321 435 B. Oil part # G0 521 62 A2.

That's a useful bit of information :thumbup: . Mine must be due for an ATF change in the not-too-distant future (currently 45k miles on the clock). Not that I intend doing it myself - but it's always good to understand what's going on. Can you confirm that yours is the standard four-speed slush box as used on the Octavia 1.8T?

Yes, i have the standard 4 speed. Doubly fortunate for me, as my Transporter has the same box, i think, and i want to change the oil in that. If you want to drain the oil completely, the fitter mentioned a plastic plug up inside the hole where the drain plug comes out. That has to be removed to drain the gearbox. I will find out for sure. :thumbup:

I am afraid i don't trust garages to do that kind of job. I worked in a retail garage for years, and due to bonus's and time constraints, plugs used to get slackened off enough to let a dribble of oil out, and retightened, so looking like it had been changed. Also,

You can check gearbox oil temp with VAG COM in measuring blocks

(its basically how the dealers do it anyhow)

Dont have an auto but when filling it put Lucas Transmision Fix in it this will stop any slipping (when moddified power wise) it also stops any leakage and will extend the ATF fluid life by 2-3 times so no more regular changes.

Its an American company primeraly supplying race or drag racing teams with additives that are above and beyond normal spec oils.

Trans fix is the Official product of The National Drag Racing Acc so is very good indeed

Yup, mine is still running OK (touch wood!)

According to the dyno plot from Jabba, it was producing 119kW (163Cv) before the remap, and 168kW (229Cv) after. The torque graph is essentially meaningless - the dyno calculations are based on a fixed gear ratio, but the transmission was continually changing (both torque and gear ratios) during the run.

I'll be taking it along to a RR day next weekend ; it will be interesting to compare it with Jabba's figures :)

I don't have the vcd readers.. I will have to average a time

Do I have to keep the engine running or I have to turn off the engine to check the transmission oil level....how long does it take to get to 40 degrees
