Engine splutter!

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

Iam running an Octavia Tdi 90BHP on an 03 plate as a private hire vehicle, Just recently when i turn the engine of it kind of like finishes with a shudder sometimes worse than others. I got my mechanic to check it over and he just said" its fine and stop mythering get out earning some money"

The point being is it wasn't doing this and when i turned it off it stopped instantly with a bit of a woosh! sounded a little like air escaping ?

Any ideas guys or do i need to stop mythering and get out earning :p

Also anybody know any decent upholstery repairers in the Manchester area as my drivers seat has worn through on the outside arm maybe a bit to do with a chubby driver getting in and out all day !

Thanks in advance Bri

I've not owned a VAG TDI90 but have had three TDI130PDs and the abrupt thump when turning off the engine sounds pretty characteristic to me. I wouldn't worry as long as the car is running normally.

Attached to the egr valve is a little black vac valve that controls the soft stop butterfly in the intake by the egr, it may be really dirty in there or the valve or vac pipe may be leaking. either way its a nothing really, in fact its a good sign that compression on your engine is good. Open it up give it a clean, check the vac pipe leading to it, etc etc, its a simple thing skoda (vw) put on to refine the engine somewhat.

also disconnect that egr, its a destroyer of the old tdi, things improve without it

And yes stop mythering and get out earning

i had an egr delete kit on my tdi 110 and wouldnt recommend it to be honest. engine shuddders when u turn off, also the egr valve acts as a safeguard against 'runaway'.

imo best thing is to take off egr and inlet manifold and clean them up and put them back on

you can disconnect the egr, without taking away the soft stop valve that gets rid of the shudder. Egr just safeguards a guaruntee that your engine wont run as well as it could. The very fact you have to clean it says that its something that contaminates the engine. Disconnect (not delete) your egr, it will give you more response, better turbo cut in, cleaner air in the engine, no carbon build up, longer turbo life, less smoke. need i go on? its a no brainer

Thanks for the info guys, Its in for its interim taxi test in a fortnight so i will get this looked at during its service and valet. I will get these replies printed out and give it my mechanic who will get this egr and inlet manifold cleaned and replaced first then if that sorts it off it comes.

Cheers guys i will report back later.

itll be the anti shudder valve, but car will be fine, they all benefit from an inlet clean though.
