Cambelt Change recommendations

Featured Replies

Hi,

My Y-Reg Fabia 1.9 TDi Comfort Estate has clocked up nearly 110k miles now. I bought it 18 months or so ago as a cat 'C' repaired motor as it was cheap, big enough and had only 70k on the clock. There was no service history, so I don't know if the Cambelt was ever changed, so I assume not.

I can get a kit with a water pump for £135, but I don't think I have the tools, or skills to change this myself. If I stuff it up and wreck my engine I will be really cross with myself :@

Can anyone recommend a place that can change the belt and water pump without ripping me off? The car's pretty much worthless as Cat 'C' so I don't really want to chuck much money at it.

I live in Bristol and work near Cirencester, but am happy to travel a reasonable amount to get a decent price.

Would it work out cheapest if I bought the parts, or let the garage order them? and what is considered a good brand of belt? I don't want something cheap that breaks and trashes my engine.

that seems ok, SKF aren't too bad tbh, and 135 including the pump is a good deal. Can't help with a garage though, unless you're prepared to travel to Abtech in Southampton, Ring around a few and get some quotes, or google for VAG specialists in Bristol :)

So far I have a price of £298.50 to do the cam belt & water pump with all rollers/tensioners and replacing all coolant with G12. All parts are also Skoda original.

I've procrastinated, but I think that's a pretty good deal, probably worth more than the car but still worth doing for a few years worry free motoring. Plus I've had a slight leak after replacing the temperature sensor (fixed now) so refiling with proper coolant would save me plenty :-) as it's been 100% water for the past 3 weeks.
