Rear wiper - does it ever stop?!

Featured Replies

Apologies if this has been covered before.

Loving my 2012 SE, but the recent poor weather has given me cause to become confused about the rear wiper operation. A quick look in the manual only served to add to my confusion, but looking at other comments here, that is often the case!

Basically I cant seem to figure out whether the rear wiper is set to operate in conjunction with the front ones. I'd prefer to have it switched off unless and until I choose to operate it but it seems:

  • It's off if I use the variable (intermittent) front wipers.
  • It's on if I switch the front wipers on fully.

I've tried both positions for the wiper stalk. Pushed furthest away means on constantly, and reverting back to the regular position doesnt switch it off, but merely puts it into the default mode described above. :wall: This is annoying to back seat passengers as of course the rear wiper motor isnt exactly quiet, and in fairness I dont know off other cars where it cant be switched off in the way I'd like.

The manual? Not exactly helpful as it seems to suggest that "off" is indeed acheivable. Sadly not in my experience when the front wipers are in use fully.

Any thoughts/experiences? Cheers

Hi,

the deactivation is in the Maxidot menu somewhere; will go have a look, back in a minute unless someone beats me to it :giggle:

TP

Settings - Lights & Vision - Rear Wiper

untick the box and you have manual control only :)

Answers my problem as well - cheers to "The Plumber"

Actually, I think that particular section of the manual is a model of clarity compared to most of the rest of it. The relevant wording is in the section titled "Automatic rear window wiper":

If the windshield wiper lever is in the position 2 or 3 [the positions for continuous wipe], the rear window wiper carries out a wiping process every 30 seconds or 10 seconds at a speed above 5 km/h.

When the rain sensor is active (the lever is in the position 1 [ie "auto wipers"]) the function is only active if the front window wipers continue to operate (no break between each wiping process).

Turn the page and you find the information about how to turn it off, as posted by TP.

I've never found the rear wiper motor to be intrusive - I can only tell when my is working when I check my rear view mirror! Maybe your rear wiper motor has a fault and needs to be checked by the dealer?

Mine frequently does a wipe when I start the car, even if it is not on or the wipers are off. I'm sure it happens before I select reverse to reverse off my drive. The lights are on auto. The Maxidot is un-checked so I am in control of it the rest of the time.

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I can't remember the solution, if there is one.

Thanks all - appreciated

You wouldn't from the front seat. The OP mentioned it was more audible for rear seat passengers.
