The MK1 VRS is ridiculously capable on the motorway

Featured Replies

I did 600 miles of driving yesterday. My 2006 Fabia VRS was very capable.....sketch that....EXTREMELY CAPABLE..

Handles like a pig - but it needs the tracking done. However, in terms of usable power and economy i honestly don't know what to replace it with. Many times i was being tailgated, and i simply tapped the accelerator and moved over once i had left a trail of smoke behind me!

Its about to hit 100k, its reliable, made of granite. Interior is bland and rattley. But i love it...others (my wife!) may laugh at the thing, but i love it.

I'll drive the thing till it dies.

I agree.

I've been thinking about possibly replacing mine, but I can't think of a single thing that does come close to the Fabia in terms of all round ability.

Even after owning mine for 2 years, it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it :)

I will never get rid of mine had it 8 years already and it has been on many Brisky meets, I plan to keep it until I cant afford to repair it anymore, so hopefully this is many many many years time.

I find driving across Europe (and Germany) and the keeping to the speed limits  the car is very capable of still keeping up and being economical :sun:

I do like mine, but I'd trade it back for my 1.8T Seat Ibiza in a heartbeat!

Best car I have had by far if im honest and love it to bits but I keep on hankering for a S2000...

Totally agree!

Although not a Fabia vRS my car shares the same engine/gearbox/underpinnings as it.

It's a very good motorway mile muncher.

We have now gone to Germany in it twice. The last time we had 4 adults and a boot full (480 litre boot). At one point I'd covered 115 miles in 55 minutes. It still managed high 40's/low 50's MPG. The time before I had a really good open run and managed 138mph (GPS) out it.

It's a very pleasing sensation to tickle the throttle in 3rd gear while going up a slip road etc.

I've had mine 5 years now (the longest I've kept a car) and it makes me smile every time I drive it. It's rock steady at speed on the motorway and comfortable too. I've done lots to it (remap, TT brakes, Bilstein prokit suspension, blah blah blah) but it's all added to the fun. It'll be a sad day when I eventually sell it, although no plans to do so at present. :) Just got to replace a dented wing (courtesy of a Polo driver) and treat it to a leather retrim.

Echo this. I did about 500 miles this weekend. And even with my mods, car still did 55mpg, pulled well (obviously :D) and on the way back even lugged about 400kg of granite worktop about 80 miles! (was looking a bit low on the back though....)

I can't wait for the Czech roadtrip! Mongrel is going to take it in its stride!

love mine on motorway, especially with Cruise

I'm thinking of changing my 1.4 16V for one, wise idea?

Probably the best move you could make!

Aha thought so, it's a bit more expensive and i'm hoping they'll take mine in part exchange

You wont look back

I had the same as you with ko3s. I'm split between the two I miss it massively and used to outrun much more expensive cars, but the petrol an tax crippled me :(

Now at inters my mate now owns the Ibiza got a 0-60 in 5.7 quarter mile in 14.3 and my other mate in his fabia se mapped/miltek and intercooler did it in 6.3 and quarter mile dead on 15.

Not a huge amount but for a lot less expense especially when doing 60 miles a day and still makes me smile! :) Just miss all the turbo noise. :(

Only upgrade for me is an ed30 but until then i'm perfectly happy with the vrs!

Cant beat a petrol turbo for the sound which is the only negative of having any TDI.

My friend has a highly modified Glanza Turbo.... that thing makes me giggle like a school girl lol. (in a childish, i like to boost kinda way)

I'm the same

Although I do like the cloud of black smoke approach to

I go through phases with mine. I've owned it for a year now, occasionally I wish I'd branched out more (my last 5 cars being 2 Polo 6N2s, a Golf Mk4 TDI, a Leon Cupra TDI, and now the Fabia) rather than stick with basically the same platform (size differences aside, pretty much all those cars have been identical chassis designs). But then I get in it on a bit of a run and go and blow the cobwebs off, and I love it again.

I can't see me selling it as I would have no idea what to replace it with, logic would suggest a newer TDI but it'd only take one 2.0 DPF/injector problem and the cost of that would keep the Fabia in parts for years, now it has a new Sachs clutch on it I'm expecting that to be the last large purchase it ever needs and it should be basic running costs only from now on...plus I paid slightly over the odds for it originally thinking that its history made it a reduced risk, unfortunately turned out not to be the case so I won't recover the extra I spent on it, I might as well run it literally into the ground!

As a car the mkI Fabia is very capable. The VRS is fun, economical and cheap to run. A great little car.

Probably the best move you could make!

massively depends on context/circumstances, surely?

Just got offered £400 for mine... little gutted tbh :|

Best car I've ever owned, the missus wasn't convinced when I suggested the Skoda, when she first drove it she completely changed her mind. We went from a Focus 2L Zetec which was also 130BHP, then I test drove the vRS and was laughing all the way round the dual carriageway. Unbelievable in gear acceleration, even at standard. Had a Quantum red remap this year and uprated clutch, I just cane everyone now. Even give my older brother a good race in his 2011 BMW M3. Will be keeping the Furby until she has disintegrated.

Am I the only one that struggles to get really good MPG?

According to fuelly I've averaged 44.0MPG over 6 fill ups, 65% of which is motorway.

I very rarely see 50MPG average on the trip computer. Only if I'm doing 1 hour+ journeys on the motorway. And I very very rarely get over 400 miles to a tank (average around 380-390).

Engine has a shark remap and PD160 intake. I have to admit I'm seeing a slight increase since the remap, but not had it long enough for a proper report.

Tyres are brand new and have good pressure, I drive fairly sensibly. Just done the cage mod, which saw me a smoother engine.

Faulty MAF? I've read a couple of cases about people instantly seeing a better return from replacing the MAF, I'd prefer to only do this if it's a guarantee due to cost. Can you clean them?

I'd guess it's a faulty MAF

Ant had exactly the same problem. MAF swapped, problem gone, more MPG :)

Anyone local who you can swap a known good one for a day and see if it helps?

I think my long term average on Fuelly is about 48mpg. It's better than my last car (I get nearly as many miles from a 45 litre tank as I did from a 55 litre tank in the Leon). So it could be better, but it's not bad enough for me that I'm going to spend time and money hunting for a problem that might not exist...

You can clean them with isopropyl alcohol, but it's a short-term fix at best from what I've read. Better to try and get a new one from TPS (I've also heard that generic replacements via GSF and the like aren't calibrated as accurately as ones direct from VW, even though they all come from Bosch originally)

I think Ant's MPG was more like low 30s, from what I remember. But yeah, he borrowed my MAF in the ****ing rain on the Shark open day and it seemed to clear his problem up so I'm assuming he's now over the moon with a new MAF :)
