best place for a aircon-regas

Featured Replies

The aircon in my vrs is not blowing very cold so I think it needs a Regas. Have rang halfords skoda and a few little indy garages, halfords have a offer on and will do it for 49 quid, skoda will do a 'service check' for £69, most little indy garages will charge around the £50/60ish mark.

I can hear a very little like squealing noise ( awaiting jokes...) when its blowing on low speed, could that be, because its very nearly empty ?

Are there any parts in there that need a service or is it just a case of checking for leaks and re-filling ?

It's a 4 and a half year car and I've had it 2 years and never had a problem until now...

Thanks guys..

Last time I used Kwikfit. They have a colder-air-or no-charge policy and charged me £49.

The AC recharge machine recovers any gas from your system, checks for leaks and refills with the correct quantity of gas and oil.

AC needs regular use to circulate the oil and keep the seals healthy. Otherwise they stiffen and leak the gas away. Use it or lose it!

When my car has a squealing noise it normally means my 3 year old has shoved Peppa pig down the back of the seat!

Not a great lover of kwik-fit since they failed to spot a cracked front spring on a mondeo I used to have, was not happy when I drove it 20 miles to work and the spring snapped in the carpark at work resulting in a repair bill of nearly 500quid for springs, shockers tyre, etc,etc.. I still have nightmares now about, if that spring had snapped when I was doing 60, well that's another story....so no, not a great fan of kwik-fit !

Anyway back to topic....

Yeah aircon is used regularly, even though I have had the car 2 years, I'm still not quite sure how it works ! I just leave it on auto set to 19 c, but yesterday I turned it down to low and it was still blowing warm, so something not right...

Think I may go to a indy garage as I think they take more care than the faceless robots that work at places like halfrauds and kill-quick...

The machines used are fully automatic so it doesn't really matter where you go. Kwik Fit did mine over the winter, its only £25 then.

well i dont suppose, even kill-quick could get a re-gas wrong when the machine is automatic, i may even risk try them at the weekend...

plenty of scope to get things wrong on an automatic machine. Been there, done that, believe me.

Wrong quantities -"theres only one Alhambra in this machine mate." "We always fill with one pipe mate - its quicker"

Use a trusted indepedant or supervise the whole operation.(they don't like that)

+1, got mine done about 6 weeks ago for £40, the chap explained everything as he went along, pointed out various a/c bits and bats, chatted about cars and in general.

You need to move up here, or be prepared to take a long drive and then I could recommend him to you :giggle:

AC in VAG never really goes off. Even on ECON there is still some circulation of the system for that reason.

Well I've just had my aircon re-gassed, £35 cash, like your guy, he explained everything as I stood and watched. Also had a general chat about cars, etc, etc.... I did say I was thinking about getting rid of my pd vrs ( because its been off the road for 3 weeks and generally been a pain in the a**e) and getting a newer cr engine vrs, he said he didn't rate the cr's and if I had mine mapped, I would be converted and the cr would be a distant dream !

So it look like I'm gonna keep it and have it mapped....

Anybody know anywhere that's any good ?
