Removing the gear knob - Daft question alert

Featured Replies

Very simple question that I can't seem to find the answer to...

Does the gear knob screw off, or pull off? I don't want to force it either way! I can dismantle the entire of the rest of the centre console - but don't want to pointlessly have to pay for another gear knob!

Thanks in advance!

Oli

You need to pull the gaiter and its immediate surround up and over the knob (so the gaiter is inside out).

Cut off the clip and then you can pull the knob and gaiter off. Open the collar to release the knob from the gaiter

Cut the metal clip surrounding the plastic that attaches to the shaft? Do I need to get a new on of these then for refitting?

Yes. It's one of those funny pressed/squeezed/pinched ones I think.

It's a single eared o-clip. It's couple of quid from the dealer. You should use a special tool to squeeze the ear but you can use a pair of pincers, as long as you put something over the jaws to prevent them cutting through the ear.

Cheers both of you. I will have a go at manipulating it off and pinching it back on. But if it breaks I'll pop into my local/give TPS a ring and get one!

Thanks again!

Don't even try to get it off - you'll just break something else.

Nice idea using a jubilee clip... I may give that a go as well as then it's removable!

Thanks!

The advantage of the original clips is that they are well clear of the gaiter. Some of the Golf boys have found that, over time, Jubilee clips can wear/tear the gaiter. If you do use one, make sure you use the smallest possible, bend the excess band inwards and wrap it with something.

Thanks for all the help so far. I am now planning on replacing the gear gaiter leather, but can't work out how to remove it from the gearstick.

The leather appears to be secured by a big plastic clip on the underside of the gear stick. Is it just a case of using force to separate the two, or is there a hand wiggle?

You need to unclip the collar. On one side is a hinge and on the other side is a clip. Use a screwdriver on the clip side to prise it open. Make sure sure you get the right side or you'll break the hinge
