Adding start / stop ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Is it possible to after market add start / stop to a mk2 vRS?

Anything and everything is possible in this world.

Apart from that!

Lets think of the problems,

Wrong Gearbox,

Wrong Alternator/battery,

Wrong wiring loom,

How long would it take to pull away at a stop if you did have it.

Are you wanting or looking for commuting fuel economy?

I am 99% sure you can't. No other car that I know with this engine/gearbox combination has the Start/Stop. And why would you want to do this anyway? If you are sitting in long traffic light stops you can always switch off yourself, it's even suggested so in the manual. I personally do it in 2 traffic lights I know they take a lifetime to get green but that's all. Also don't think that a start/stop system will offer any significant benefit to your fuel consumption.

It was just a general interest. I do a mix of driving and I notice sitting in traffic or at light the MPG slowly ticks down.

I'm not up to speed with the technical details on how start / stop is achieved, i.e. what extra bits you would need in order to do it.

Totally not worth it imho, and not just about the vRS but generally speaking. I mean sometimes you just have to stop for 10-15 seconds max, I listen to a car behind me braking, switching off and then after only 3-4 seconds re-starting as we set off... How can this si****ion be more economical than standing on idle? There are of course cases where there is a cross-junction and you are sitting on the road of "lowest" importance hence your green light lights for a very short time and only after all the others have passed which can easily be 2+ minutes wait but then you can easily (and probably should) switch off yourself as with any other car without a start/stop.

The only thing with switching off manually in a car without start/stop is that the starter motor isn't up to being used as frequently. The ones in cars with start/stop are much more robust.

I'm surprised more manufacturers haven't used a system like Mazda did where it would start the engine purely by injecting fuel and igniting it. Obviously only for petrol engines.

I too stop it at lights, especially when the engine is cold it does help. The TSi starts so quick that you'd have thought it could easily be done with software when DSG lever is put to neutral. As said, the manual suggests it even for short stops.

I do certainly put it in to neutral when at long lights. Presumably it disengages the clutches?

Yes, but so does the foot brake.

The TIguan is the only 1.4 TSI lump i've seen with the BlueMotion tag from the Volkswagen - although not sure if it has Start/Stop?
