as title has the 1.2 got a cam belt or is it a chain.

if change does it every need to be changed.

It's chain (both 1.2 TSI and HTP) and there's no mention in the service book schedule regard it needing replacing at any time; keep going until it rattles I guess.

Bit worrying how skoda quoted me around £400 to change the cam belt.

Therefore I ask my local garage which then said its a chain.
