Wandering fuel gauge

Featured Replies

Does anyone else have problem with a roving fuel gauge. The other day my fuel light came on, gauge showing nearly empty. Following day gauge shows nearly quarter tank. Filled it to brim. Next day showing 3/4 full and car not used. The gauge seems to have a mind of its own. This is on an 08 VRS diesel estate. Any clues please.

Thanks in advance

as a start you could check the multplug on top of the tank

Mine is very sensitive to the angle of the car. Quarter of a tank difference between accelerating uphill to breaking downhill. Much more noticeable than previous cars.

Looking at the Haynes manual, it seems the diesels use a traditional level float / moving arm arrangement (a bit like an ordinary cistern ball ****) to sense the level in the tank. It could be that the arm is sometimes jamming on its track.

If it goes down from full without using fuel, there could be a leak in the float that is making it slowly sink, although it would go to empty and stay there if that were the case.

Taken all comments on board, will check wiring. Agree that the gauge does move easily on accelerating and braking but can get different readings on level ground without even moving.....

the Normal ie: old fasioned method of checking doesn't seem to work anymore, if you "pull" the unit from the tank you will find that the level sensor is removable from the pump and has 2 wiring connecters if you decide to swap anew one is approx£50 off fleebay I would try to clean the "track" and "wiper" with a solvent DO NOT try to remove the track from it's mount it appears to be printed onto very thin glass (don't ask me  ) you could allso degumm the wiring connectors Havn't tried anything with vag-com but if someone is in the know let's here it keep us posted that way we all learn cheers Nic

Thanks for that Cheshire Cat. When it stops raining........ i will have a look at what you said. Where do you acess the pump from ?. Mines an estate by the way.

I think it's under the seat at least you can check the wireing /connector in order to remove the pump sender unit you will need to have the tank at least half full/empty preferably lower interesting with no guage!! also a tool or makeshift "key" to turn the ring it's tight and plastic

Had the tank unit for the fuel gauge out today for the intermittant problem with roving fuel gauge on my VRS diesel today. Cleaned it all up, unfortunately still seems faulty. And now the car will not rev and is stuttering. Had the fuel pipes off. Does it need bleeding or the like. Help please.

Had a " plank" moment. Pipes on wrong way round. Seems ok now. Gauge still seems faulty. Anybody bought a tank sender unit, and how much.?

Seems like the sender unit. Cheshire Cat says they are approx £50 on eBay.

Good luck hope you sort it :)

Been nearly 5 months now since my original post and still having problems with fuel gauge. Car been in garage 4 times.

Had new sender unit, then complete pump including sender, then replacement pump assembly because first one was faulty and now back in garage for further investigation. Still getting inconsistent reading from fuel gauge, temp gauge seems fine.

Anybody had similar problems?

BUMP    ever get it fixed

Is there a voltage regulator for the fuel sender ?

I have only just bought a 2011 scout and had a similar problem where the gauge suddenly went south. After reassuring myself there were no leaks I pursued the electrical side. I pulled the fuse cleaned it and put it back. Simple but it may just be something like that
