T-Cut....forced into it :(

Featured Replies

Had a feeling it would come to this at some point, opting for a red one.....

Most of the car is fine but the boot spoiler had decided to fade and it had taken on an slightly orange tinge. Nowhere near as bad as my AW11 MR2 used to get as that literally went pink on a weekly basis but noticeable.

A quick go with T-Cut colour fast and it's a nice deep red again.

Just goes to show the contents of modern reds are much more fade resistant than those of 80's / 90's cars but still not 100% immune.

Wonder why the spoiler had done it and not the boot lid though? Different paint thickness perhaps?

OK for a once in a blue moon thing but knowing that it takes a layer off makes me reluctant to do it too often. It's taken 4 years for it to get to that point so it can wait another 4 years before it gets it again......

I've read on here that the spoilers are painted away from the car so will be of a different paint batch etc.

Would a 2008 Octavia not of had a clear coat over the top of the red to prevent paint fade? we had a 2003 Fiesta that did and when we sold it in 2010 it was showing no sign's of paint fade, unlike our 1996 red fiesta that became pink. .

Interesting. Wondered why this had faded and the rest of the car had not....

You'll find that all painted plastic parts are prone to fading as the paint cannot be cured at high temperatures as the plastic will melt.

Ahh, now it makes sense. Also figures why the wing mirrors are slightly like it too, although we're talking really slightly

I've also just applied a coat of underbody seal/ WaxOyl to the sill lip and gully sections (the bits you can't see unless you're practically under the car) too as the car has spend quite a bit of time on garage ramps recently and they've taken a bit of a kicking - being made of toffee and all. Seeing as though the thing is costing me nigh on £1500 this month I might as well look after it. :)

Interesting - I started on a friend's red A4 last weekend and was surprised to discover there was clear over the lacquer (just goes to show how far behind the times I am). If the red is still not % immune from fade, presumably you will never be able to polish through the clear to make the pink red again.

Well this was literally just the boot spoiler and a polish did bring the red back nicely so I'm doubting there's a clear coat there. Very different finish to the rest of the car based on how it's reacting to sunlight as the rest of the car is still deep red. :)

I have just started to correct the paintwork on my Corrida Red motor in preparation for a long term sealant to be applied. Admittedly I have not got any fading on my plastic but I have found that I can machine polish with no problems on any of the plastic body work from the wing mirrors to the front skirts. It might be worth trying a far less aggressive product than T-cut in the future?

If it works for you then great but the very mention of T-cut personally makes my cringe

Are you thinking of the original cutting t-cut, they do other product's with less cut in them. .

This isn't the cutting compound stuff or the scratch remover (which I also do possess and that it hellish stuff - must be used with extreme caution). This is the colour magic stuff which is effectively a polish with a dye in it, Feels no more "gritty" (for want of a better word) than the autoglym polish I've used, but adds coloured wax back into the swirls etc too.

I used it all over a red Cavalier I had years ago that had gone pink and it brought the car up like new and it stayed that way for the next 2 years of ownership.

Like I say, use carefully and in this case only on the spoiler and it's done the job well. That scratch remover on the other hand that they sell stays locked away and generally only gets non automotive use from me.

To be fair I haven't touched T-cut since the 90's so my opinion may be a little skewed  . I am very impressed with Gtechniq P1 at the moment. It is bringing up my car a treat.
