hybrid turbo headache!

Featured Replies

i unexpectanty blew my standard turbo up and am in the process of stripping, cleaning and re-building my engine! :( im after a hybrid turbo to put back on once its all built but money is a issue at the moment! ive been loking around and the turbo dynamics pd150 stage 2 is £954 which is alot. to be honest all the turbos ive seen say they have the same mod's to make them stage 2. ive seen a few on ebay but i dont know if there any good and i would rather by a expensive one than buy a crap one thats going to brake. i know ive got to get the car mapped once this is on and does anybody have any suggestions to where to take it to be mapped in the northwest?

any advice would be great as im in a big rush to have this done. ( it went bang on friday and i need it back on the road ASAP!!)

Thanks :)

I see you're in Mold. My Aunt ans Uncle live there :-) Shark are good, but they are in Manchester I believe.

Have you also got a Front mount intercooler? Will be essential if you go Hybrid. Have you thought about getting a hybrid PD130 instead?

Shark are in Mansfield, but they have a dealer network now. I'm sure there's a dealer in Telford, I don't know how far that is from Mold?

I would use performance torque mate they are the cheapest I have found for a stage 3 custom map and I now a few people they map cars for and they recommend them

This was the thread I was telling you about Iain. Tdi turbos on ebay may be another option?

How about cr turbos, and turbo technics?

yeah ive already got a front mount and everything i need for a hybrid except the solid flywheel but that will have to wait. buying a new turbo and rebuilding my engine when i wasent expecting to has emptied my wallet (and overdraft) completly! thanks for that phil, im trying to get a email address or phone number for this guy now to see what his prices are and what he can offer. :p

there you go mate, he normally replys within a day and is very down to earth.

Also what do you mean by rebuilding your engine? What other problems have you ran into with the turbo failure?

when the turbo went it shattered the compressor on the inlet side. my intercooler is full of oil and when the drained the oil its full of metal so everybody ive spoken to said strip, clean and rebuild it to be on the safe side so i dont score the cylinders. ill add a picture to this post of whats left of my turbo.

aw never this is the same as mine intercooler was full of oil and bits. I have yet to drain the oil though. How far have you gone with the strip down as in what have you removed?

  • Author

well at the moment ive got all the intercooler and pipe work off, both inlet and exhaust manifolds and turbo. i havent as such started to strip the engine yet as i wont have the money till towards the end of the month so im waiting till closer the time so its fresh in my mind and i dont forget where things go lol. have you blew yours up aswel? and are you going to strip the engine aswel?

How much oil ended up in the intercooler dude? Was there much oil in the pipe work too?

Looks a really nasty break up on the cold side :(

Hope you sort it relatively pain free mate

Yer mine went kaput too :(. I will get the oil out and check it, i have been told to remove the sump aswell as there is a filter or something that can block up. I had abit of oil the one side of the cooler but the other side that goes to the egr is pretty clean, i think the cooler acted as a sort of filter maybe.

  • Author

yeah my intercooler didnt have to much oil in and again the egr side wasent to oiley either but if you drain the oil from your sump and catch it in a clean tub and let it settle, then run a magnet through it and see if there any little metal particles. there is in mine so im stripping it to be on the safe side and not risk damaging the cylinders. yeah there is a strainer in the sump but it wont catch particles unfortunatly. when your turbo went did it spray oil everywhere? my engine bay is absoluterly covered in oil aswel! i think its going to roughly cost me £1200-1300 to do all this including having the car mapped with the stage 2 hybrid. gotta find somebody with a trailer now though to pull it somewhere to be mapped once its done! :)

Mine didnt spray any under the bonnet but out the exhaust was another matter (check my avatar). You can drive it once all the parts are fitted just wont get the full gains.

Glad you've got a plan sorted! Definitely worth going hybrid at this point ;)

Puts me off getting mine mapped :|

No need to trailer it. It will drive just fine with a hybrid. Will just run learner as its sucking in more air.

Pretty sure people have had turbo failures on vRSes without maps. The KKK turbos that got used in the Fabia/Ibiza platform PD130 simply isn't as well built as the Garrett unit you'd get on a Golf/Passat/A3 PD130, from what I've heard. That's why if you buy a hybrid it'll almost definitely be a Garrett, and you'll only get a trade-in discount if you're trading in a Garrett, the KKK's aren't well built enough to be any use to a turbo company.

I wouldnt touch P-Torque, they have blown up several hybrid diesel turbo's and get very bad ratings over on another VAG forum that dont have them as payed sponsors ;)

At the moment I also wouldnt rate Turbo Technics after the 700 mile old turbo I had fell into two pieces on the welds on the inlet and they blamed the fact I had metal intercooler pipes.... then sent a replacement (paid for by the company working on my car) and that was bench tested without the housing on and sent up, as with the housing on there was no movement at all!

So they have a 3rd chance now to sort it.

I have heard good things about CR Turbo's from Jabbasport.

ive just ordered a stage 2 hybrid from a guy called adam at tdi turbos, he used to work for turbo dynamics. £700 +£15 for cut back i mean stagger gap total seal piston ring + £12 delivery. ive had a price of £399 from awesome to map the car and they said not to drive it until its mapped as could cause damage? im waiting for a price from unit 20 to map it as there about 15miles from where i live maximum!! everybody ive spoken to wont take my old turbo in exchange for 2 reasons. 1. its knackered and 2. its a KKK. there all saying there unreliable and wont deal with them. i need to buy a egr delete now and a "divot" pipe to replace the standard pipe if anywhere knows where i can buy one from cheap?

Edited by vrsiain

I think your getting confused a Dovit pipe is an EGR delete pipe made up and sold on here a good while ago I believe by VRS Dovit, he's username.

That dovit pipe was a stainless replacement for the plastic hard pipe running alongside the engine up top. It's not needed to be replaced for hybrid imo as the standard is hardly restrictive!

Not restrictive - just the standard joints are pants :)

  • Author

yeah i dont want to change it for restriction. i need to change it because the plastic pipe has the crappy clipped joints and the new egr delete wont have that so ill have to buy a 90 degree boost pipe that wont have the clipped end so it wont join to the plastic pipe. unless anybody can add a picture to how they have joined theres on?

I think a few have cut the metal ring off the end of the standard top 90* pipe an slid and clamped it on the egr delete.

I've never had an issue with those top clips from the hard pipe back running 2bar boost
