1.6 Diesel - Right choice?

Featured Replies

55mpg from a 1.6 sounds a bit low, I would have expected more like 65 (I get 50+ out of my Scout on runs).

The 1.6Tdi is a good engine. Whilst it lacks the low down grunt of the old 1.9Tdi, it is quieter, cleaner and more economical.

By way of comparision, my previous Superb Twindoor 1.9Tdi achieved 57.18mpg, while my 27.500 mile Superb Combi 1.6Tdi is currently averaging 65.15mpg.

That said, I still think the 1.6Tdi would benefit from another 10Ps. I've driven the 1.6 diesel versions of the Mondeo and 508 which have 115Ps, and the increase in power is instantly noriceable.

The superb is a very big/heavy car for the 1.6 but in the Fabia it seems very well matched. I also have a 250bhp octavia and I never feel that the Fabia is underpowered.

I used to have an ibiza sport with the 100bhp 1.9td and that was massively torquey under 3000 rpm and then flat by 3500, the new 1.6 has a much more linear delivery, revving free until 4500rpm.
